After holding El Salvador in a hard-fought draw, the USMNT return home to take on Canada in their next World Cup qualifying game.

Preview

The USMNT will welcome rivals Canada to the Nissan Stadium in Nashville for their second game of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. Both teams are looking for their first win in the qualifying round after starting the campaign with draws. For the former, a trip to El Salvador ended up in a disappointing 0-0 draw despite Gregg Berhalter's men staging a dominant performance.

The result ended a nine-game winning run for USA who are eager to return to the mundial after missing the last edition in Russia. Having won the CONCACAF Nations League and the Gold Cup, the young group are poised to make a difference and they can make a big statement with a win over Canada. Their neighbours, alongside Mexico, are the two biggest rivals who could dent their chances of qualifying to Qatar 2022.

With just one defeat to their name in their last 20 appearances across all competitions, the USMNT will very much be a handful for the Canadians who have endured a topsy-turvy ride in recent outings. The Canucks approach Sunday's encounter off the back of a 1-1 draw with Honduras in Toronto. They conceded the opening goal on the brink of half-time following a foul by Tajon Buchanan before Cyle Larin restored parity for Les Rouges in the 66th minute.

The result prevented Canada from recording successive defeats as they had previously fallen to Mexico in the semi-finals of the Gold Cup which was eventually won by the USMNT. So far, they have managed just one win from their last four outings in all compeitions although the eight fixtures that preceded that period all ended in wins. The meeting with the Stars and Stripes will also present John Herdman's side the opportunity to avenge the 1-0 defeat they suffered when the pair met in the States earlier this summer.

Predicted starting XI

  • USA: Turner; Dest, Brooks, Ream, Robinson; McKennie, Adams, C Roldan; Reyna, Sargent, De la Fuente

  • Canada: Borjan; Johnston, Vitoria, Miller; Hoilett, Hutchinson, Eustaquio, Laryea, Davies; Larin, David.
