Preview

Manchester United play their first Premier League game of 2024 this Sunday as Erik ten Hag's men aim to return to winning ways. Unfortunately, the struggling Premier League giants will be in for a tough test this round as they play hosts to Tottenham who look to complete the league double over the Red Devils.

Rashford and Co. have been in action already this year, taking on Wigan in the FA Cup 3rd round less than a week ago. The English giants won that fixture 2-0 but their last outing in the Premier League came on December 30 and that match ended disappointingly for the club.

Ten Hag's men traveled to Nottingham Forest in that game but suffered an embarrassing 2-1 loss at the City Ground, with Rashford getting their only goal of the game. To put this into perspective, this was Manchester United's ninth defeat of the Premier League campaign.

The club have now been leapfrogged by Chelsea following the London side's 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday, leaving the 20-time English champions in 10th with only 31 points from their opening 20 games.

That Nottingham Forest defeat was merely another sour note in what has been a disastrous campaign for Manchester United so far. The Premier League side crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in the group stage, finishing bottom of their group, and with Sir Jim Ratcliffe having been confirmed as a minority stakeholder at the club, Ten Hag will have to stop this rot for his own job security.

The hosts will also be out for revenge, having lost in their previous encounter with Tottenham. Although the three-time UEFA Champions League winners were controversially denied a first-half penalty, they squandered several opportunities before eventually fading away in the second half and getting outplayed by the North London outfit.

Tottenham, meanwhile, suffered a crisis of their own between early November to early December. However, the North London side have since turned a corner and head into this tie on the back of lovely form.

During that aforementioned period, Ange Postecoglou's side failed to win a single Premier League game, losing to Chelsea, Wolves, West Ham, and Aston Villa while pulling off a 3-3 draw away to Manchester City.

However, since then, the North London heavyweights have taken to the field six times and have won all but one of those games. The club have since climbed up to fifth in the table and are only a single point behind fourth-placed Arsenal who were top of the table on Christmas.

The visitors' most recent outing came in the FA Cup, with Pedro Porro scoring a wonder goal to seal a 1-0 victory over Burnley, thus making their trip to Old Trafford their first league game of 2024. Their last top-flight match of 2023 was a 3-1 victory over a Bournemouth side that had won 3-0 at Manchester United a few weeks before that.

However, with the Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations having kicked off, Postecoglou's men have been dealt a tricky curve ball. Three key players have thus departed North London to represent their national team, with the standout figure being top scorer and club captain Son Heung-min. Can Spurs cope without their key players and pull off a win at Old Trafford?

Team news

Manchester United: Ten Hag has lost both Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat to the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicked off on Saturday, while Mason Mount, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, and Anthony Martial are all sidelined. However,  Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Antony, and Lisandro Martinez have all recovered from injury and are in contention for this tie.

Tottenham: Spurs have lost three key players due to the Africa Cup of Nations and Asian Cup, with Son Heung-min, Yves Bissouma, and Pape Sarr have all left for international duty. Timo Werner was brought in on loan and could make his debut but this game could be too soon for recent signing Radu Dragusin. Ben Davies, Giovani Lo Celso, James Maddison, Dane Scarlett, Manor Solomon, and Ivan Perisic are injured while Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have both returned to training.
