Monterrey are the last team standing from the Mexican Primera División, and that honor has not come easy for Fernando Ortíz and his team. "El Tano" and his men made it past the group stage in first place after beating Real Salt Lake (3-0), and Seattle Sounders (4-2). Los Rayados would go on to beat Portland and Tigres UANL, both of them with similar one-nil scores, and once in the Quarter finals, the club managed to overcome Los Angeles FC despite being down two-nil after 45 minutes. The Boys in Gold reached the KO stage by winning one game in their group, while losing a tough 4-3 game against Toluca. Once in the Round of 32, Nashville needed penalties to eliminate Cincinnati FC from the tournament after a one-all draw, and in their next game, Gary Smith's men eliminated América in another controversial penalty shootout.
