The 17th season of Major League Soccer on ESPN will begin Monday, March 12, at 9:30 p.m. ET, on ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPN Deportes with the live telecast of the Portland Timbers vs. Philadelphia Union match from PGE Park in Portland, Ore.
The inter-conference matchup will be the culmination of Major League Soccer’s First Kick 2012, a series of nationally televised matches to open the 2012 season-opening week (March 10-12).
Highlights of 2012 MLS season:
All 21 (11 on ESPN2, nine on ESPN, one exclusively on ESPN Deportes) regular season matches will be available in high definition and carried on ESPN Deportes, ESPN Deportes Radio, ESPN Mobile TV, ESPN3 and WatchESPN;
Top three teams by appearances: current MLS champions Los Angeles Galaxy (eight), New York Red Bulls (seven) and Seattle Sounders (six);
The Los Angeles Galaxy clinched their third MLS Championship with a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo in last night’s MLS Cup Final.

Landon Donovan scored the decisive goal for LA following good buildup play from David Beckham and Robbie Keane.
The Galaxy started the game strongly, and Adam Cristman wasted a golden chance in the 12th minute when he headed wide from a Beckham corner inside the six-yard box.
Cristman was starting in place of the injured Chad Barrett, and was presented with another good chance to open the scoring 15 minutes later. Donovan beat Jermaine Taylor out on the flank and teed up Beckham, who sent over a teasing cross that Cristman headed over the bar.
One minute before half-time, Houston created their only shot on target of the night when Danny Cruz had his long range effort saved comfortably by Josh Saunders.
The Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo will go head to head in the 2011 MLS Cup Final on Sunday night.

The game will kickoff at 9pm (Eastern Time) and will be played at the Galaxy’s home field.
This is the fourth time that the Home Depot Center has hosted the MLS Cup Final, but the first time the hometown Galaxy have competed in a final there. In fact, this is only the third time in league history that a team has contested the MLS Cup Final on their home ground.
Back in 1997, D.C. United beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 at RFK Stadium in the second ever MLS championship game. Then in 2002, the New England Revolution fell 1-0 to the Galaxy at GiIlette Stadium courtesy of an extra-time strike from Guillermo Ramirez.
Both Los Angeles and Houston will go into Sunday’s game looking to secure their third league championship trophy. Interestingly, the New England Revolution have been on the losing end of all four MLS Cup Final’s that these two clubs have won.
Sporting Kansas City and the Houston Dynamo will clash in the Eastern Conference Final at Livestrong Sporting Park on Sunday.

Sporting Kansas City come into this game in excellent form having lost just four of their last 30 games. Kansas City advanced this far with a 4-0 aggregate victory over the defending MLS Champion Colorado Rapids, and are confident of progressing further.
“It’s been that hot team in the playoffs that usually makes a good run of it,” midfielder Graham Zusi told the official MLS website. “That’s what we are right now. We’re a hot team, and we’re tough to beat right now.”
Daneil Cyrus and Luke Sassano are ruled out with injury for Kansas City, while Peterson Joseph and Konrad Warzycha are also sidelined.
The Los Angeles Galaxy and Real Salt Lake will clash in the Western Conference Final on Sunday night at the Home Depot Center.

This game is a rematch of the 2009 MLS Cup Final which Salt Lake won on a penalty shootout. Both teams have spoken respectfully about each other this week ahead of what should be a tight and entertaining match.
“I think the games have always really respectfully been played – very competitive, but a lot of good soccer,” Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis told the official MLS website this week.
On the other end, Galaxy star man Landon Donovan said “we’ve consistently – both teams – have been the best in the league for a few years now. It’s not a nasty rivalry, but clearly they’re great games and we expect the same tomorrow.”
The Colorado Rapids will play host to the Columbus Crew in an MLS Cup wildcard playoff game on Wednesday night.

The winner of this game will travel to face Sporting Kansas City in an MLS Cup quarter-final matchup on Sunday.
Conor Casey and Anthony Wallace are ruled out with injury for Colorado, while Pablo Mastroeni is questionable due to a concussion. Jamie Smith and goalkeeper Matt Pickens are expected to shake off minor injuries in time to play.
Veteran center back Drew Moor will lead the Rapids defense, and is fired up ahead of this playoff clash. “It’s a one off,” Moor told the official MLS website. “The winner moves on, loser goes home. Anything can happen in games like that. We need to take advantage of our home field.”
FC Dallas will play host to the New York Red Bulls in the opening game of the MLS Cup Playoffs on Wednesday night.

Dallas go into this game as the top seeded wildcard team and will earn an MLS Cup quarterfinal at Sporting Kansas City this weekend if they win here. New York will earn a trip to face the MLS Supporter’s Shield winning Los Angeles Galaxy if they manage to win in Texas.
Brek Shea, Kevin Hartman and captain Daniel Hernandez are expected to play for Dallas after being rested for last weekend’s 4-2 defeat at the hands of the San Jose Earthquakes. Playmaker David Ferreira remains sidelined with injury for the Hoops.
Defender George John will lead a Dallas backline that will be charged with shackling French superstar Thierry Henry. John has encouraged his teammates to focus on the task at hand ahead of the playoffs.
Last summer saw Manchester United trample the MLS All-Stars side through a 5-2 victory; but Coach Sir Alex Ferguson has declared that the imminent clash would probably be visibly different.

The Red Devils are currently on a tour in the United States as part of their preparations for the upcoming season, and they have so far shown great stability. They came from behind to defeat Chicago Fire 3-1 on July 23; however, Fergie has yet to make space for complaisance in his team, knowing how costly this mistake could be.
“We are at the stage where the games are a bit more serious,” the Manchester United manager stated during a press conference.
“The MLS (All-Stars) team is much stronger than the team we played last year, with players like David Beckham and Thierry Henry. Both are fantastic footballers with a great profile.”
TSN will air the MLS All-stars vs Manchester United club friendly live at 8:30 ET.
Football fans will be treated with a great club friendly on Wednesday night. At the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey, MLS All-Stars will face the most successful team in English Premier League football, Manchester United.
David Beckham, Omar Bravo and Thierry Henry give the MLS All-Stars team a glamorous line up as Manchester United are set to deploy their best players in the form of Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Chicharito, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and company.
Meanwhile, ESPN Classic will feature the 2006, 2007 and 2008 MLS All-Star games. ESPN Classic’s schedule goes as follows:
The 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game Presented by adidas; it’s going to be live on ESPN2 on Wednesday, July 27. Kick-off time for the program is 8:30pm ET and the venue is the Red Bull Arina in Harrison, N.J.

ESPN’s organization for the coverage of the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game Presented by adidas goes as follows: top MLS commentators John Harkes and Adrian Healey are set to call the action, Rob Stone has been appointed as sideline reporter while studio pre-match, half-time and post-match segments coverage will be conducted by Alexis Lalas, Max Bretos, Taylor Twellman and Steve McManaman live from the Red Bull Arena.
There will also be live in-game interviews with select players and/or coaches. Thanks to ESPN International networks’ coverage, the MLS All-Stars vs Manchester United friendly match will be available to more than 39.3 million televisions in 104 countries across the globe.
The Colorado Rapids won their first MLS Cup title with a gritty 2-1 overtime win against FC Dallas.

League MVP David Ferreira opened the scoring for Dallas, before Conor Casey equalized to send the game into overtime. In the extra period good play by Macoumba Kandji resulted in the game winning goal bouncing into the Dallas net off unfortunate Hoops defender George John.
The game was scrappy and physical from first minute to last, but FC Dallas managed to keep possession well in the first half and opened the scoring with a lovely goal 10 minutes before half time. Martin Chavez got free on the right flank and sent over an inviting cross that was volleyed home by Ferreira who had drifted between the Rapids center backs.
The MLS Cup will crown a new Champion on Sunday night when FC Dallas and Colorado go head to head at BMO Field in Toronto.

The MLS Cup Final will be contested by two wild-card teams, with Dallas being perceived as the favorites to take home their first MLS Cup title. FC Dallas will be playing in their first ever MLS Cup Final, while the Rapids will be at their second. Colorado lost the second ever MLS Cup final 2-1 to D.C. United in 1997.
It has been a long road to the Cup Final for FC Dallas. Their opening home game was played in front of only 8,016 fans, and mush discussion centered around the seeming lack of interest in the team. After Dallas went on to win only 2 of their opening 10 games, few fans would have predicted what has transpired.
The Colorado Rapids lifted their first MLS Eastern Conference Championship on Saturday night with a hard fought 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.

The game saw an unlikely hero emerge as it was defender Kosuke Kimura who netted the game winning goal that guarantees Colorado a spot in next week’s MLS Cup Final in Toronto, Canada. Colorado will face FC Dallas who advanced from the Western Conference final with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Rapids had the better of the play for most of the first half and received their reward when Kimura opened the scoring with the decisive goal in the 42nd minute. Colorado played some nice short passes from a throw in that allowed Kimura to swing in an intended cross. The ball evaded forward Omar Cummings and bypassed everybody on its way to the far corner of the net.
