Most-watched soccer games in the USA: April 17-23, 2023

Soccer fans in the United States had quite a variety of options to watch in terms of games, and surprisingly, it was an international match that caught the most attention from soccer enthusiasts in the country.

The game that won this week's battle for the ratings had the USMNT and Mexico playing out to an exciting one-all draw. Mexico took the lead in the first minutes of the second half, and even if Diego Cocca's men came close to adding up to that lead, the USMNT bounced back and capitalized on a swift counter-attack.

The runner-up for the week came out of a Liga MX match, where underdogs Pumas UNAM earned a 1-1 draw against América, one of the leaders in the Mexican top flight. Pumas were unable to hold on to their lead, as the game's goals came in just a matter of five minutes. That game earned Univisión over 900,000 average viewers, which combined with TUDN's tally add up to over one million fans watching this fixture.

The bronze medal in this ranking goes to the return leg of the UEFA Champions League tie between Bayern and Manchester City, which also concluded in a one-all draw but with the English side making it through. The Cityzens took the lead thanks to Erling Haaland, but a late penalty saved a bit of pride for the hosts.

Here are the soccer matches with the largest audiences in the USA for the past week.

What are this week's must-watch games?

Roma vs Milan live this Saturday at 12 p.m. ET exclusively on Paramount+

Two Italian giants lock horns this weekend as Roma play hosts to AC Milan in a crucial fixture in Serie A's top-four race. These two teams are through to the semifinals in Europe, with the Giallorossi making the Europa League last four while the Rossoneri are battling in the penultimate round of the UEFA Champions League. However, the visitors sit in fourth while Mourinho's side are fifth in the table. While the two teams are tied on 56 points and equal on goal difference, Leao and Co. hold the advantage thanks to their superior number of goals scored. Regardless, Roma boast the home advantage and know a win at the Stadio Olimpico could shift the top-four race in their favor.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa live this Sunday at 9 a.m. ET exclusively on Peacock

Two clubs fighting for European places will face off this weekend as Manchester United host the tricky Aston Villa. The Birmingham side have been one of the best teams in the country under Unai Emery's reign and are in sixth, albeit six points adrift of the top four. The Red Devils, meanwhile, sit in fourth and enter this clash on the back of their 2-2 draw at Tottenham, having thrown away a 2-0 first-half lead to pick up a mere point. Will Ten Hag's side bounce back against Aston Villa? Don't miss this clash.

Liverpool vs Tottenham live this Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET on: USA Network, Telemundo, Telemundo Deportes En Vivo, and the NBC Sports App, nbcsports.com

After coming back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Manchester United, Tottenham prepare for another tough showdown, this time traveling to Anfield to face Liverpool. Klopp's men have been nothing short of disappointing this season but have gathered some form lately, winning their last three games and going on a five-game unbeaten run. As a result, the Reds, who are seventh in the table, are within a point of fifth-placed Spurs and could leapfrog Harry Kane and Co. with a win this Sunday, thus making this an interesting tie.

Arsenal vs Chelsea live this Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET on USA Network, UNIVERSO, Telemundo Deportes En Vivo, UNIVERSO NOW, and the NBC Sports App

Arsenal return to action this midweek after their crushing 4-1 defeat away to Manchester City, a result that has all but ended their title hopes. Arteta's men are on a four-game winless run and while they sit two points ahead of the Cityzens, the Gunners have played two games extra and will fall behind their rivals if Pep's side win their games in hand. Chelsea, on the other hand, lost 2-0 at home to Brentford, stretching their losing streak to five games under interim coach Frank Lampard. A victory at the Emirates Stadium would be a spectacular way to end this horrible run, but while the North London giants have stumbled recently, Saka and Co. remain a tough side to play against.

This week in women's football, April 28, May 4, NWSL, UEFA Women's Champions League, Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolfsburg, Barcelona

As always, there will be plenty of interesting matches not to miss in the women's game, including the semifinals of this season's Champions League and the opening stages of the NWSL season.

Here's all you need to know ahead of another exciting week of women's soccer.

UEFA Women's Champions League

The second leg of the 2022/23 UEFA Women's Champions League gets underway this week, as Barcelona, Chelsea, Wolfsburg, and Arsenal all battle for the chance to become crowned champions of Europe at the end of this season. Barcelona, who won it in 2021, earned a narrow 1-0 win over Chelsea last week to come into their upcoming home tie this Thursday holding a slight advantage, but the Blaugrana certainly will not be sitting on their laurels when the Blues come to town.

Meanwhile, Arsenal successfully battled their way from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg, but their return home turned into an absolute nightmare. Fortunately, no one was injured when Arsenal's team plane struck a bird and caught fire, but it remains to be seen if the players will still be shaken up by that frightening incident when they welcome Wolfsburg on Monday for the second part of their semi-finals tie.

NWSL

Matchday four begins on Friday as Houston Dash take on North Carolina Courage. Both teams come into this game having won one of their first three games but have not had an overall strong start to the nascent campaign. Dash have alternated between a draw and win from their first three, while Courage started off brightly, but have lost their last two ties to slide down the table.

Elsewhere, struggling Orlando Pride, who have yet to win a single match this season, will be hoping to get themselves out of an early season crisis when they travel to battle San Diego Wave on Saturday. San Diego, for their part, ended up losing last time out so it goes without saying they will be keen on getting back to winning ways and taking advantage of Pride's poor early form.

Kansas City Current are another side who have had a poor start and have also yet to win a single game so far this term. Having lost their first three times, Current will hope to make amends in a home tie against NJ/NY Gotham, but that may be a lot easier said than done this Sunday.

Primera División (Liga F)

With 25 wins from 25 games, it looks like no one will be able to stop Barcelona from cruising to the league title. The Blaugrana not only have picked up a perfect 75 points but continue to surge ahead at a shocking rate, with 105 goals scored and just five conceded. The Liga F winners will continue their steady march towards another domestic crown on April 30th, just three days after facing Chelsea in the semifinals of the Champions League.

Certainly, fatigue could be an issue given that the Blaugrana will play two games in three days. However, both ties are at home, and the team they will be facing on Saturday, Sporting de Huelva, have won just one of their last five games and are just two points away from the drop zone. So, even if Barcelona do opt to rest quite a few key players - and they are expected to - it's hard to see anything but a win for them against a struggling opponent when they resume league matches this weekend.

Second-placed Real Madrid are a whopping ten points behind the league leaders, but Las Blancas will hope to continue onwards and make it a fourth league win on the trot when they welcome fellow Madrid-based side Madrid CFF this Sunday. The visiting side currently sit in fifth, which is a massive improvement over their 13th-placed finish last season, and despite being the seeming underdogs in this tie, will hope that their recently strong form could help them pick up at least one point this weekend.

Other happenings in the women's game

Meanwhile, there have been some exciting new revelations regarding broadcast details for the upcoming FIFA 2023 Women's World Cup. Set to kick off in just a few months' time, the latest installment of the inter-continental tournament will be covered by multiple broadcasters worldwide, including FOX Sports.

The American-based broadcaster will cover all 64 matches of the tournament, which begins on July 20th and ends on August 20th, via its family of channels as well as its dedicated streaming app.

Major League Soccer: Preview, news, and broadcast details for Matchday 10

Once this weekend comes to an end, each team in the MLS will have played ten games. After two months, we are now getting a good idea of which teams could thrive and reach the playoffs, and which ones will have to focus on other tournaments and achievements to make their seasons worthwhile.

This week's matches will offer a variety of stories to follow, starting with the game where the New England Revolution and FC Cincinnati fight for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Both teams are level at 20 points, but the latter's goalscoring record is not as good as the one the current leaders can brag about. It will be a match to keep an eye on and a good parameter for both to see how big are their chances to succeed in this campaign.

The Western Conference is also pretty close to call, as St. Louis City and the Seattle Sounders are on top with 19 points each, but with the 2022 MLS Cup winners, LAFC trailing them by one point. There will be no direct match between these teams this weekend, but St. Louis' match against Portland Timbers will be an interesting clash to keep an eye on due to the repercussions it could have for the top spot in the conference.

Without further ado, here's what you should keep in mind before Matchweek 10 kicks off.

How to watch Matchweek 10 in the 2023 MLS season?

Fans in the USA and Canada will be able to watch select games on regular TV networks. The first one of those will be Nashville vs Atlanta, where the away side will try to leapfrog the conference leaders with a win. Later on Saturday, fans in Canada will be able to tune in to watch Sporting KC vs Montreal, a game where both teams will be trying to leave the last spot of their respective conference. The rest of the fixtures for the weekend will be available to be streamed in over 100 countries via MLS Season Pass.

Top news of the week in Major League Soccer

Charlotte's Swiderski bags Goal of the Week honor

In what turned out to be one of the closest polls to decide the best goal of the weekend, Polish player Karol Swiderski claimed the gong for himself with his game-winning goal against the Columbus Crew. It was the second goal for the European striker in the 2023 season, and it could not have come with better timing for his team, as they managed to end a four-game run without a win thanks to his strike.

FC Cincinnati part ways with Brenner in record-breaking transfer to Serie A side

Brazilian striker Brenner will see his European dreams come true this summer, as FC Cincinnati have sealed a deal with Udinese. The former Fluminense and Sao Paulo attacker will be joining the Serie A club after Cincinnati agreed a record-breaking deal of ten million dollars plus a number of add-ons, which makes this one of the biggest deals in MLS history. The team snubbed offers from Udinese and Nottingham Forest in January, but the Italian club's resilience to sign the player was enough to see the deal through.

Columbus Crew defender ruled out for 2023 season

Even though we have barely seen two months of competition in this year's MLS season, some have already played their final match. One of those is none other than Will Sands, who came down with the season-ending injury in the team's loss to Charlotte on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Sands earned two assists in seven games for the Crew as their starting left back, who developed his game properly under coach Wilfried Nancy. Even though the team worked out a deal to replace Sands prior to the end of the transfer window, the absence of the rising defender will be missed by a team looking to go back to the MLS playoffs.

Biggest stories of the week

Reasons for Leo Messi's failed contract talks with PSG revealed

Lionel Messi and PSG seemed to have an agreement to extend his deal with the French side, but time has gone by and now the attacker seems to be heading out of the club despite those discussions. A recent article by Le Parisien has revealed the reasons for the falling out between the Ligue 1 leaders and the Argentine's entourage.

The article by the French media outlet states that Messi and the club did not carry on with their contract extension talks after Messi's father and agent, Jorge, requested the team to give Messi a raise following his performance with La Albiceleste in the 2022 World Cup.

PSG's response to this demand came swiftly, as Nasser Al-Khelaifi and his attorneys turned down that request, which brought all contract talks to a standstill. Now, with only two months left in his deal, it seems like Messi will have to search for pastures new, although the player's inner circle also had something to say on this matter.

The report by Le Parisien adds that Messi's entourage denied such a request by Messi's father, blaming PSG for the status of this negotiation. Furthermore, the player's inner circle added that PSG wish to rebuild the team with Kylian Mbappé as the man to lead the project and that Messi's exit would make it easier for them to hire new players.

Added to that, the team has not ignored their supporters' reactions to Messi's performances, which have included insults and jeers following key losses, especially when the club was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League.

Be that as it may, it seems that PSG and Messi will be parting ways this summer unless there is a breakthrough in their negotiations and any of those involved give in to the other parties' demands.

FOX announces broadcast schedule for 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup is literally just around the corner, with less than three months remaining before the ninth edition kicks off in Australia and New Zealand in July.

For the first time, this competition will be a 64-game tournament, and the USWNT, who have won the last two editions, will again seek to successfully defend their title.

Fans in the USA will certainly be eager to cheer on the Stars and Stripes as they look to do a "three-peat" this summer, and now, FOX Sports have announced exactly how supporters will be able to follow the action (despite many of the games kicking off at some interesting times for people living in the United States).

FOX will cover all 64 games, starting from the tournament opener on Thursday, July 20th featuring co-hosts New Zealand and Norway, and concluding with the final on Sunday, August 20th.

29 of the games will be covered live by FOX, which, according to the company, will represent the largest number of women's games covered by a US broadcast network. The other 35 will be carried by FOX Sports 1 (FS1), while fans can live stream all 64 games via the FOX Sports App.

Of the 29 games being covered by FOX, five will take place during primetime, while another 12 will be taking place over a weekend. FOX will also cover the quarterfinals (August 11-12), semifinals (August 15-16), third-place consolation game (August 19), and the final (August 20).

In addition to the aforementioned dedicated coverage, fans will also get to enjoy great supplemental programming adding up to nearly 200 hours of bonus content, including FIFA Women's World Cup Live, FIFA Women's World Cup Today, and FIFA Women's World Cup Tonight. These three programs will offer pre and post-game analysis as well as featured stories and in-depth looks at key players and squads.

Finally, for the USWNT, there will also be additional coverage, with a two-hour specially created pre-game show ahead of each of their three group stage games against Vietnam, Portugal, and the Netherlands.

UEFA reportedly considering surprise location for future Champions League games

New York? Washington, DC? Boston? Los Angeles? Miami?

All of these (and many other cities) could be potential venues for Champions League games in the not-too-distant future. For years, American fans have had to settle for watching their favorite Europe-based players and teams taking part in the continent's elite club competition in two ways: either on TV (or via their computers or other devices) or traveling thousands of miles (and at added expense) to watch them in person.

Well, according to reports, UEFA just may be open to the possibility of bringing the hugely popular club competition stateside. Current UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin in fact stated that "It is possible [for Champions League games to be played in the US....[after all] football is extremely popular in the United States these days".

In addition, Ceferin also expressed his delight that many Americans are truly interested in following European teams by noting "What shocked me actually is that our Euro (2020) finals, Europe national team finals, was [apparently] watched by more people in the United States than [the] NBA Finals. What shocked me is that 30 matches of the Euros, every match viewership was [equal to] a Super Bowl viewership."

It will be interesting to see which year USA-based fans could have the chance to see a major Champions League match staged on American soil. The next few finals are already booked, with Istanbul hosting this year's event, followed by London in 2024 and Munich in 2025.

However, the 2026 final has yet to be decided, and given that the USA will be co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup along with Mexico and Canada, is it possible that maybe a lucky American city will have the chance to also host one of the world's most popular footballing tournaments?

Haaland breaks Salah's record as Man City gain advantage over Arsenal in Premier League title race

Erling Haaland has broken yet another Premier League record after inspiring Manchester City to another vital win in their Premier League title charge. The 22-year-old Norwegian striker scored his 33rd goal of the season in Wednesday night's 4-1 win over Arsenal, to topple Mohamed Salaha's feat as the outright top scorer in a 38-game Premier League season.

The highly-anticipated clash between defending champions City and current league leaders Arsenal barely lived up to expectations, with the former securing the win with little to no resistance inside the Etihad. Ahead of the clash, Pep Guardiola's side was five points behind the Gunners while having two games in hand. Knowing that victory would put their quest to retain the title in their own hands, the Citizens came out with all guns blazing and were successful in putting the Londoners to the sword.

Talisman Kevin De Bruyne was largely instrumental in the night's win and was successful in opening the scoring with a sensational breakaway goal inside the first seven minutes. The Belgian playmaker who ended the night with the Man of the Match award subsequently assisted John Stones for his first Premier League goal in two years. Following a prolonged check by the Video Assistant Referee, the goal was made to stand as City entered the break with a two-goal advantage.

In the early minutes of the second half, Erling Haaalnd assisted De Bruyne once more for Man City's third goal of the night. The former subsequently took his side's tally to four in the fifth minute of additional time, almost 10 minutes after Rob Holding had scored Arsenal's consolation goal.

With the goal, Haaland took his tally for the Premier League season to 33 in 31 appearances, beating Mohamed Salah to the record with seven more games to spare. On the contrary, the night's result also meant that Manchester City, who still have two games in hand, are just two points behind Arsenal, and could establish a two-point lead should they emerge victorious in their outstanding matches.

Why Arsenal's 4-1 loss to Man City could cost the Gunners a lot more than this season's Premier League title

Arsenal's trip to Manchester City on Wednesday ended in a nightmare as the Premier League leaders were thrashed 4-1 by the reigning champions Manchester City, with Guardiola's men now in the driving seat in the title race.

A brace from Kevin de Bruyne and goals from Erling Haaland and John Stones handed the North London giants another huge set-back, stretching the visitors' winless run to four consecutive games.

While Arteta's men remain two points ahead of Manchester City, Haaland and Co. have two games in hand, meaning the Gunners will fall four points behind if Pep's men win their delayed fixtures.

However, while that was the most significant blow following Wednesday's defeat, it isn't the only issue. Missing out on the Premier League title after leading the table for so long is gutting but there are other concerns headed Arsenal's way.

Brighton's loss to Nottingham Forest that same day means that the North London giants have secured UEFA Champions League berth for the first time since 2016/17. However, things could be bleak for Saka and Co. in Europe next season.

Winning the Premier League would have secured a spot in Pot 1, meaning Arsenal could have received a favorable draw. However, finishing as runners-up could result in the club dropping to Pot 3 for the group stage.

Pot 1 is reserved for the clubs that win the Champions League, Europa League, and Europe's top six leagues — this would increase to seven if one club from Europe's big six leagues win their domestic championship and one of the aforementioned European trophies.

What about Pot 2? Here is where the coefficient comes into play. Due to Arsenal's six-season absence from the UEFA Champions League, they are currently ranked 23rd by UEFA, with Real Madrid, Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Porto, Juventus, Inter Milan, RB Leipzig, and Manchester United all sitting ahead of Arteta's side.

And with Real Madrid set to miss out on La Liga and facing Manchester City in the Champions League semifinals, they too could drop into Pot 2, meaning Pot 3 is a likely outcome for the Gunners.

This means a Group of Death could await Arsenal in their first season back in Europe's premier competition in years. Despite their blip in form, the English giants remain a tough team. However, this could make next season complicated.

Arsenal women's team survive horrific scare following 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg

Over the weekend, Arsenal's women's team faced Wolfsburg as the Gunners hope to eventually win what would be their first UEFA Women's Champions League trophy since the 2006/07 campaign. This is the second consecutive time that Arsenal are being pitted against German opponents, having successfully dumped Bayern Munich out in the quarterfinals after securing a 2-1 aggregate win.

Despite Wolfsburg grabbing a 2-0 lead inside the first 25 minutes, Arsenal were able to claw their way back into the tie and scored two to finish the first leg level at 2-2. Yet, the joy the team certainly would have felt following their impressive fightback soon turned to horror during their return back to London.

According to reports, the team's plane was hit by a bird and subsequently burst into flames while attempting to take off from the runway. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it meant that Jonas Eidevall's squad had to stay an extra night in Germany and leave on Monday afternoon.

Arsenal will look to book their ticket in this season's final when they take on Wolfsburg for the second leg on May 1st.

MLS loanee scores four times vs Real Madrid to make La Liga history

Valentin 'Taty' Castellanos put up a remarkable performance on Tuesday, scoring four goals against La Liga giants Real Madrid. The striker, currently on loan from Major League Soccer club New York City FC, etched his name into La Liga's history books by becoming the first player in the 21st century to score a poker against Los Blancos in the competition.

Real Madrid went into Tuesday night's encounter without talisman Karim Benzema and first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and were put into a rather uncomfortable position with Girona taking the lead in the early minutes of the proceedings. Castellanos, who was in the spotlight, opened the scoring by heading the ball into the net in the 12th minute, and then received a long ball and finished past Real's goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to double his tally in the 24th minute.

With his contribution, Castellanos - who now has 11 goals in the league - made history by becoming the first player in more than 75 years to score four goals in a single La Liga match against Real Madrid. The last player to accomplish the feat was Esteban Echaverria who scored five goals for Real Oviedo against Madrid in December 1947. The 24-year-old striker is also the second Argentine to score four goals against Real Madrid in a single match, with Diego Milito being the first to do so in 2006.

CONFIRMED: Fixtures for the 2023 edition of the Leagues Cup revealed

Next summer will go down in history when the revamped version of the Leagues Cup takes place between Liga MX and MLS teams on American soil. 47 clubs will be fighting to take the top honor and three spots in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League, but it will be a long way for those teams that want to make history in this competition, as they will have to undergo a tough group stage and a knockout round to determine the names of the winners.

A draw was held earlier this year to allocate 45 teams in 15 groups of three, with two teams from each group reaching the defining stage. Defending champions Los Angeles FC and Pachuca have already been handed a spot in the knockout stage, leaving 30 spots to fight for the crown up for grabs.

The first round will begin on July 21 with five matches, while the last day of activity in the group stage will come on July 31 with four matches. It is important to let you know that both leagues will be paused for the entire month to give way for this competition, which will mark a new era in CONCACAF.
