The struggling Reds host Sean Dyche's side as the Merseyside giants continue their search for a first Premier League win in 2023.

Liverpool, who desperately need a win, are back in Premier League action this Monday as the English giants gear up to face bitter rivals Everton in the latest edition of the Merseyside Derby. Anfield will be the venue for this 3 p.m. ET showdown as Sean Dyche looks to inspire the visitors to a second consecutive victory.

As mentioned earlier, the host enter this game in horrible form. Liverpool's most recent fixture was a Premier League trip to Wolves, with the English giants suffering a shocking and unexpected 3-0 defeat away to Lopetegui's side.

In fact, this was the fourth Premier League game in a row in which Jurgen Klopp's men failed to win, losing three—all of which were away from home—while drawing at Anfield against Chelsea. This means that last season's UEFA Champions League runners-up have only four victories from their last 10 top-flight matches.

Injuries have played their part but this hasn't sparred the manager from criticism for his failure to address the midfield and his tactical shortcomings this season. Liverpool are without a win in 2023 and with the club sitting 10th in the table, a whopping 12 points behind the top four spots, Salah and Co. appear destined to miss out on UEFA Champions League football next season.

However, pride is still up for grabs. While the Reds lost at home in the Merseyside Derby as recently as February 2021, the English giants haven't suffered a home defeat against Everton in front of their fans since 1999 — that 2-0 defeat two years ago against the Toffees took place during the COVID-19 shutdown.

But if there was ever a time for Everton to end this wait, it is now. The relegation-battling side have struggled at Anfield for decades but head into this tie with some confidence after their remarkable result last weekend in the Premier League.

The Toffees, who are in the relegation zone but could exit it and leapfrog Leeds and West Ham into 16th with a win, faced none other than Arsenal in their last outing. The Gunners have been the best team all season and remain top of the league despite Saturday's slip-up against Brentford. The Merseyside outfit, on the other hand, have struggled this term, hence their position in the table.

However, after sacking Frank Lampard in late January, Sean Dyche was appointed as his replacement and the English tactician delivered a masterclass in his debut game, leading his side to an impressive 1-0 victory over the Premier League leaders.

James Tarkowski scored the only goal of the game to earn Everton their first league win since late October. If the relegation battlers can overcome Arteta's high-flying Arsenal, can they pull this off again against the struggling Liverpool? That's the question on everyone's mind so make sure to catch this showdown live.

Team news

Liverpool: Diogo Jota could be back in the squad for the first time in months after returning from injury. However, while Roberto Firmino and Arthur are back in training, neither is expected to be fully fit for the Merseyside Derby. Thiago and Luis Diaz are also sidelined while this game comes too soon for Van Dijk and Konate, meaning Klopp will have to rely on the Matip-Gomez partnership once again.

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin is, unfortunately, unavailable following his impressive performance in the win over Arsenal. This means Maupay will deputize in the no.9 role. James Garner and Andros Townsend are long-term absentees

Key stats

  • Everton have only managed to win one out of their last 27 encounters with Liverpool across all competitions.

  • However, the Toffees have avoided defeat in four out of the last six Merseyside Derby showdowns.

  • Liverpool are not only on a four-game winless run but are also on a three-game goalless run in the Premier League.

  • The last time these two sides met, the game ended in a nil-nil draw, with Conor Coady seeing his goal ruled out for offside by VAR.
