Liverpool’s talismanic skipper Steven Gerrard has been sidelined with a groin injury for six months now.
Gerrard has developed a reputation over the years for digging Liverpool out of trouble and driving them on to success through sheer force of will.

Memorable Gerrard moments include;
• With Liverpool staring elimination from the 2005 UEFA Champions League group stages in the face, Gerrard fired home a blistering strike to ensure progress to the knockout stages.
• In the Final of the same 2005 UEFA Champions League tournament, Liverpool found themselves 3-0 down at half-time to AC Milan. Gerrard scored the first goal, then won a penalty to drag the game back to 3-3 and Liverpool would go on to win a penalty shootout.
• Liverpool won the 2006 FA Cup Final on another penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw with West Ham United. Gerrard equalized to bring the game to 2-2 early in the second half, and fired home a dramatic last minute equalizer to force extra time.

Sadly for Liverpool fans, they will need their captain to dig them out of trouble all over again. Early this season it seemed like Liverpool would be riding high and Gerrard would bolster a surprise title challenge for the resurgent Red’s.

However, after the last two games Liverpool will be looking for any kind of win to get their season back on track.

First Liverpool lost their unbeaten record when they were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. That was followed up last weekend by a truly disastrous trip to face Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Spurs beat Liverpool 4-0 that day, and the Red’s must now do without suspended duo Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel in the immediate future. Adam was red carded at White Hart Lane, and Skrtel received a second yellow card after bringing down flying winger Gareth Bale, who had tortured him all afternoon.

Liverpool will be looking to repair morale with a Carling Cup victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. Championship club Brighton are third in the league and have lost only one game all season. The Seagull’s will also be motivated to take a high profile scalp at their magnificent new home, the American Express Community Stadium.

The return of Gerrard should lift the Red’s ahead of an important stretch in their season. After the trip to Brighton Liverpool will face Wolves, Everton and Manchester United in Premier League play.

It is an important stretch of games for the Anfield club, and they will need their very own ‘captain marvel’ to be at his inspirational best.
