A Brief Look At The Past Stages In General

Group Stages

The group stages provided us with plenty of thrills and excitement last year. The likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Shakhtar Donetsk proved to be a force despite being regarded as underdogs before it all kicked off.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United all stayed unbeaten throughout the group stages while Chelsea and Bayern Munich were equally impressive with five wins out of their six matches. Schalke, Lyon and Benfica were involved in a battle for qualification to the next round but Lyon and Schalke eventually prevailed from Group B.

AC Milan edged themselves into the next round while Inter Milan also made it after finishing second in Group A, behind Tottenham Hotspur. MSK Zilina were arguably the worst side of this group stages after losing all their six matches while they also conceded a massive 19 goals in six matches.

Round Of 16

The second round also provided us with interesting match-ups involving the likes of Arsenal vs Barcelona and Inter Milan Vs Bayern Munich.

Barcelona proved to be superior as they defeated the Gunners while Inter displayed a magnificent showcase of determination as they sealed their spot in the quarter finals with a good performance in Allianz Arena- leading to a 3-2 win and a 3-3 aggregate score. Inter progressed with a higher number of away goals.

Chelsea overcame a spirited FC Copenhagen while Manchester United were made to work hard before they defeated Marseille. Shakhtar proved their class again by thumping AS Roma 6-2 on aggregate Schalke knocked out Valencia with a 4-2 score line on aggregate.

The biggest story of the second round was probably Jose Mourinho's success in bringing Real Madrid into the quarter finals for the first time in over seven years.

What Each Remaining Team Represents In Europe

For Real Madrid, it's about continuing their success under Jose Mourinho. The 'Special One' won the Champions League with Inter last season and will be looking to bring similar success to his new club.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Barcelona will be back in business of trying to win the crown again. Both teams have recently won the cup and it will be interesting to see how they cope with the 'favorites' tagline.

Chelsea will be looking to lift the European Cup for the first time in their history while Shakhtar and Tottenham will be aiming to continue their good run of form in Europe despite being regarded as major underdogs.

Bayern Munich and Schalke have not been up to standards in the Bundesliga this season and Europe represents their biggest chance to salvage a down falling season.
