Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has intensified the clash between Manchester United and Chelsea by stating that their spending spree during the January transfer window will not win them the title this season.
Chelsea spent a massive £75m on Fernando Torres and David Luiz in a bid to improve their performances and luck both on and off the field. However, Ferdinand who will not play any part in the clash at Stamford Bridge has stated that all their spending will not necessarily guarantee them the title for this season.

'I just love transfer deadline day. The Torres deal did make me think "Wow, they’ve really gone for it,"' Ferdinand told the club's official magazine Inside United.

'But will those transfers really improve Chelsea this season? I don’t know. Next season, I would say yeah, they will. But it’s hard to settle in quickly in January'

Rio Ferdinand also admitted that he was expecting United to make a late swoop for someone on deadline day although that did not take place.

He added: ' I thought that there was a chance we might make a surprise bid for someone.

'People assume that, as players, we’re in the know, but unfortunately we’re not. It’s not for want of trying to find out, that’s for sure!

'But the manager goes about things the right way. He keeps things to himself and plays his cards close to his chest. And he always moves quickly to make a deal.'

Rio Ferdinand will be forced to watch the game from the stands because of an injury and in his absence; Chris Smalling is expected to start alongside Nemanja Vidic.
