The former Red Devil may have poked the bear with his recent comments.

Ex-Manchester United star Paul Scholes has revealed that his former club lacks the personnel to compete for the Premier League title this season. The Old Trafford outfit finished second behind their cross-town rivals Manchester City last season with 19 points separating the two sides.

Nonetheless, the optimism for Manchester United to win a silverware in the new season still remains low as, unlike City and Liverpool, the 20 times Premier League champions did not do enough in the transfer window to fix some areas of major concern in the team.

The club, after signing Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant, stalled in their transfer dealings despite the popular demand for a center back among their fan base. And this accurately compliments Paul Scholes’ narrative of Jose Mourinho’s team lacking the tools to mount a proper title challenge against two of its archrivals.

"When you look at Manchester City, possibly Liverpool, I don't think they [United] have the quality of those two teams at the minute," Scholes said to the Daily Mirror.

"Liverpool have made some really good signings. United finished above them last season.

"I just don't see United getting closer to City. City is a really good side, great manager, some great players, a way of playing that they all know about and Manchester United seem to be not too sure what's going on.

"You don't really know the team, you don't really know the players, you don't know how they're going to perform from one week to the next.

"So I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see them challenging for the league this year."

Manchester United opened their 2018/2019 English Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Leicester City. The team will travel to the Amex Stadium to take on Brighton & Hove Albion in the next game.
