Match facts and other historical stats - Brazil vs. Sweden

  • Sweden have only scored three goals so far. This is the fewest of any side in this round, and in fact, no women's side have ever gotten this far having scored just three goals
  • Both Brazil and Sweden have made five appearances at the Olympics
  • Brazil and Sweden have met three times at this tournament, and so far, they've won all three games, whilst scoring eight and conceding one

Team news

Brazil

Brazil will be coming into this game having survived a very tough spot-kick shootout against Australia. Despite out shooting their opponents by 29 to 10,  the Canarinhas were unable to break the deadlock, let alone score, and after 120 minutes of tense action, came out on top despite star player Marta missing her penalty.

Having thrashed Sweden 5-1 in the group stages to seal their spot in the knockout rounds, the hosts will be hoping to record another resounding victory over a familiar opponent. Since that win, however, Brazil's performances have dropped as they were held to a surprise 0-0 draw against minnows South Africa, and whilst Australia are no pushovers, were unable to assert their dominance and just scraped through.

Sweden

Meanwhile, the Blågult finally overcame their USA hoodoo by beating the Stars and Stripes in their quarter-finals clash. Although the USWNT managed to equalize, Pia Sundhage's ladies hung on to push the game to penalties, which they won 4-3.

Sundhage, of course, is no stranger to Olympics finals, having led the USWNT to two consecutive gold medals in 2004 and 2008, and now having orchestrated the elimination of her former side, will be hoping to guide her native Sweden to glory this summer.

Match facts and other historical stats - Canada vs. Germany

  • Germany and Canada have met once before at the Olympics, with Canada winning that fixture 2-1
  • That game, of course, took place during this summer's group stage
  • It also happens to be the first time Canada have beaten Germany - both in competitive and friendly matches
  • The last time Germany featured at this venue, it was the men's team, who thrashed Brazil 7-1 in that historic World Cup win back in 2014

Team news

Canada

John Herdman's squad have had a great Olympics. They opened up their campaign with a resounding 2-0 win over Australia, despite having to play pretty much the whole game 10 players. This was then followed by a 3-1 victory against debutants Zimbabwe, followed by arguably the most significant positive result so far: a triumph over Germany.

Prior to their 2-1 win, Canada had faced Germany 12 times in both competitive and friendly matches. They had never won, let alone managed a draw, but managed to get the job done, and pulled off another upset by defeating heavy favorites France 1-0. This, naturally, will help boost their confidence, and the team will be further helped by the returns of key players Christine Sinclair and Janine Beckie, who were rested during the last clash.

Germany

Silvia Neid's side may not have topped their quartet, but Germany are nonetheless still viewed as one of the major contenders to clinch Olympic gold this summer. Still, they are not without some concerns. They predictably cruised an an easy 6-1 win over Zimbabwe, but struggled against Australia. In fact, the Matildas were leading 2-0 before Germany were able to claw their way back with two late goals in each half. This was then followed up by their 2-1 loss to Canada, and against China, they labored a bit before finally getting a breakthrough in the 76th minute.

Bayern Munich's Melanie Behringer has netted four goals so far, which puts her in contention for the top scorer prize. Will she be able to fire Germany to glory against a Canadian side growing in confidence?
