Team news

USWNT

The USWNT are not just the reigning Olympic champions, but also have utterly dominated this tournament since it first began 20 years ago. In fact, the Stars and Stripes have won all but one of the past five women's competitions and are naturally the heavy favorites to successfully defend their title.

In their opening match, Jill Ellis's team were solid, but not spectacular. Goals from Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan were enough to get the job done against New Zealand, but the English tactician will be expecting much more from her players as they seek to finish top of their group. This, of course, will guarantee that Team USA will avoid taking on the winners of Group F in the next round, which looks likely to be fellow heavyweights Germany.

France

It may surprise some fans, but France's women's team are relatively new to the Olympics scene. In fact, Les Bleues only made their debut back in 2012, when they finished in fourth spot and so far, Philippe Bergeroo's side have made a dream start to their campaign in Brazil.

Simply put, France outclassed Colombia from start to finish. They out-shot their opponents by 14 to four, and enjoyed an overwhelming 66 per cent of possession versus Colombia's 34. Of course, the USA will represent a more serious challenge for the ambitious European side, who, as noted before, have struggled historically against one of the giants of women's football.

Key for France will be players like Eugenie Le Sommer, Camille Abily, and Louisa Necib. Le Sommer and Abily were on target for France against the Colombians, with the latter scoring a brilliant free kick for the team's third shortly before half-time.
