This may come as a huge blow to Liverpool fans hoping to see the Reds sign Mario Gotze next season, as Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has opened the door for a return to his former Bundesliga side.
German tabloid Bild recently reported that with club captain Mats Hummels growing closer to a Bayern Munich switch, die Schwarzgelben could use the center-back in order to resign the 23-year-old nearly three years after leaving the Signal Iduna Park.
BVB fans may not be all to happy to see the World Cup winner back at Westfalenstadion after his controversial switch to die Roten, with supporters expressing their disapproval with banners that read “Milan or Madrid – Just not Dortmund. Piss off Gotze”.
However, whilst speaking at a public conference, club chairman Watzke admitted that a return to BVB is always a possibility for Gotze, having failed to nail down a spot in the Bayern Munich starting eleven.
The BVB CEO said: “If he’s on the market, it’s clear if we discuss about him.
"The door is always open for every player who comes from Dortmund. If he returns we have to talk with the fans and he has to explain how he left for Bayern.
“But I don’t think that they won’t give him a second chance.”
Liverpool, a club rumored to be interested in acquiring Gotze’s services, may now lose out in the race for the German midfielder, as Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of reuniting with Mario now faces severe roadblocks.
