The former Argentina captain promises big things at the Vicente Calderon.
Diego Simeone promised to help Atletico Madrid relive its glory days upon his official presentation as the new coach of the club at the Vicente Calderon stadium on Tuesday.

Simeone, 41, was brought in to replace Gregorio Manzano after Atletico's horrendous start to the season, where not only do they lie in 10th place in La Liga but last week were knocked out of the Copa del Rey at the hands of third-tier Albacete.

"I like an aggressive team. I want to see a strong team, a team which is committed and quick on the break. These are things which Atletico fans have always liked and which they identify themselves with for the love of this shirt," Simeone stated to the press during his first news conference as the coach of the club.

Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid Report

Saturday November 26 2011,
Tags: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, La Liga
Real Madrid entered the game knowing that victory over Atletico could take them 6 points above archrivals Barcelona at the end of Matchday 13…
Jose Mourinho interestingly chose a 4-2-3-1 formation with Karim Benzema upfront and Marcelo back in defense for the first time in three weeks. The visitors were in to break their 12-year winless record against Los Blancos and they opened up their chances through Adrian.

The young striker finished off a lovely one-two with midfielder Diego with a dazzling strike to stun the home crowd after 15 minutes. However, Atletico Madrid’s good start didn’t last so long.

Thibaut Courtois brought down Karim Benzema in the penalty box and thus received a red card. Cristiano Ronaldo successfully converted the spot kick to equalize for Real Madrid inside the 24th minute.

Los Blancos currently possess a three-point advantage over the Catalans but these are three points that could increase or decrease in a blink of an eye before El Clasico on Matchday 15.

Next week, Sporting Gijon may stun Real Madrid as they did last season while injury worries could also rock Los Blancos during the next few days. But at the moment, the focus is on Saturday’s Madrid derby. Much is at stake for both sides as everyone knows.

“We will go for the victory,” assured Atletico Madrid midfielder Gabi.

“There is no reason to fear anyone. This is the moment to show we are a good team. We need to have a good match at the Bernabeu.”

Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid Preview

Friday November 25 2011,
Tags: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, La Liga, Santiago Bernabeu
The Santiago Bernabeu will host the much-anticipated Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid local derby. Kick-off time for this fixture is at 2:00pm EST and 7:00pm GMT on Saturday, November 26.
Jose Mourinho has an array of stars to choose from to compose his starting XI. In midweek, key players such as Iker Casillas and Cristiano Ronaldo were offered full rest.

Others like Mesut Özil and Xabi Alonso only played a portion of the Dinamo Zagreb match and should be fit enough to feature as starters against Atletico. Meanwhile, Brazilian defender Marcelo may return to the squad after enduring the past three weeks on the sidelines.

Another huge boost for Real Madrid is based upon Radamel Falcao’s expected absence from the derby. The Colombian is currently recovering after sustaining an abductor muscle injury while on duty with his national team. As Atletico midfielder Gabi revealed on Friday, “if there is a chance [for Falcao], he will try to play.”

Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid Report

Saturday September 24 2011,
Tags: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, La Liga, Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi emulated Cristiano Ronaldo by clinching a hat-trick tonight as Barcelona wowed the public at the Camp Nou yet again.
Atletico Madrid had absolutely no chance of stealing points from the Catalans on Saturday night. Like Barca, Atletico played with a 4-3-3 formation. Falcao, Reyes and Diego led the front line but their combination couldn’t match the class of Lionel Messi.

At the other end of the field for the visitors, goalkeeper Courtois endured a total nightmare. David Villa put Barcelona in front against the run of play after just 9 minutes. From there, Atletico Madrid got lost. Lionel Messi tricked Miranda into an own goal 6 minutes later.

Midway through the first period, La Pulga scored his first of the match to create an impressive record: scoring against 50 different goalkeepers since the start of his professional career.

Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid Preview

Saturday September 24 2011,
Tags: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, La Liga
After two points missed away to Valencia, Barcelona absolutely need to wake up and be in control of their situation with a win over Atletico Madrid.
Four places may be separating Barca and Madrid, but there is only a point between them. The Catalans were not able to jump in the table’s Top Three after they collected a single point at the Mestalla on Wednesday. They maintain their fourth position though, while Atletico Madrid climbed to eighth in midweek following their 4-0 triumph over Sporting Gijon.

Considering the tight placements in the standings, a defeat for Pep’s boys would drastically affect their run and possibly prevent them from competing as strong contenders for La Liga title this season. For Atletico, any positive result would not only give them a huge boost of confidence ahead of their subsequent league game against Sevilla, but also would it push them two points ahead of the defending champions.

The draw for the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League season has been made and titleholders Porto won’t be able to defend their title as they’ll participate in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League.
In arguably the most interesting group, Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham Hotspur will have to affront Russian giants Rubin Kazan. Group I could however compete against Group A as the most exciting.

For Fulham, Dutch contenders FC Twente might also present a tough challenge in Group K. The 12 UEFA Europa League groups have been ranged as follows:

La Liga Players’ Strike is a Shameful Example of Clubs Spending Beyond their Means

Monday August 22 2011,
Tags: Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia
The start of the Spanish La Liga will be delayed by two weeks due to a strike withheld by unpaid players.
The beautiful breathtaking football tends to hide the financial mess that has seemingly overtaken La Liga. Reportedly, the clubs owe more than $72 million in wages to around 200 unpaid players. As expected the Association of Spanish football players (AFE) and the Spanish Football Federation are at loggerheads over this issue.

To resolve the matter, the Spanish FA has offered to place a central fund of about $14.5 million to pay unpaid players. $345,000 would be the minimal annual salary paid to unpaid top flight players and the amount would be $172,000 for the players in the second division.

Barcelona Transfer Rumors: Do The Catalans Need Sergio Aguero?

Saturday June 11 2011,
Tags: Sergio Aguero, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Julio Salinas
Barcelona are apparently eyeing for the signature of Sergio Aguero but do they even need him?
Sergio Aguero is destined for a move away from Atletico Madrid this summer with Barcelona being reported to be keen admirers of the Argentinean. However, former Barca favorite Julio Salinas believes that the Catalans do not need a player of Aguero's caliber and claims that the Argentinean would be better off at Real Madrid.

"I think Barcelona will not sign the 'Kun' because they are not looking for a player of that profile, not looking for a striker. I think Aguero fits in better with Real Madrid."

Nonetheless, Salinas did suggest that Cesc Fabregas would be the perfect addition to a Barcelona squad that is brimming with talent. Anyhow, Salinas also added that Fabregas will have to compete from the base if indeed his dream move materializes.

La Liga is at its decisive point, but perhaps, Pep Guardiola was right when he stated that due to the flowing happenings this week, the Barcelona vs Getafe game has somewhat been forgotten.
This match is nothing but an exciting one, owing to its importance. Although Barca’s archrivals Real Madrid will also be facing a huge test this weekend against Atletico Madrid, the Catalans still need to complete their mission without any mistake in order to maintain their authority at the top of the Spanish League table.

“It is one of those games that can cause you to lose the league,” said Guardiola. “Three points won’t win us the title, but if we do not get them, things will get much more difficult.

“(...) We are entering the all or nothing stage of the season, and we need to stay in shape and form for the final stage of the campaign.”

Focus On La Liga’s Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Before El Clasico Cup Final

Friday February 4 2011,
Tags: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, La Liga, Copa del Rey
Javier Mascherano is ecstatic at the Barcelona vs Real Madrid Copa del Rey final fixture. But the defender hasn’t forgotten to focus on La Liga as Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid comes on this weekend.
The Catalans are well ahead of Real Madrid in the league with 7 points separating the top spot from the second position. On Saturday, they will play Los Blancos’ local rivals Atletico Madrid with the same ambition that has seen them collect 58 points so far in the race for La Liga title – and that is nothing but the aim of winning.

Barcelona are not willing to get carried away by the comfortable situation which they are currently enjoying. Earlier in the week, they sealed their passage onto the final of the Copa del Rey and they now await April 20’s mouth-watering Barcelona vs Real Madrid clash. But as Javier Mascherano explained on Barcelona’s official club website, there is still a long way and many more matches to go before that date.

“It is always great to qualify for a final, but because it is against Real Madrid, this will be magnified.

“A final against Madrid will be wonderful,” he added. “But there are many big games to play before this, and we have problems to deal with in other competitions.”
