Man United host Stoke City at Old Trafford tonight for their Premier League fixture.

The Red Devils need nothing less than a win in this match, especially after losing to Southampton at the same venue late last month.

The hosts are facing major injury concerns and to make things even worse, they did not sign any player in the just-concluded January transfer window. They will be relying on their current crop of players, who have been blowing hot-and-cold this season, to help them cruise past Stoke.

Manager Luis Van Gaal is used to being booed by fans of the Red Devils and it is high time he considers steering his men back to winning ways or risk facing the sack. Despite the few wins that his men have registered this season, most recently away to Derby County in their FA Cup fixture, Man United have still failed to play convincing and entertaining football. They have struggled to put the ball at the back of the net on numerous occasions, something that could cost them three crucial points when Mark Hughes men come calling.

After being bundled out of the Capital One and FA Cup, the Potters could arrive at Old Trafford breathing fire and thirsty for a win. The last time the two sides met was on Boxing Day last year, when Luis Van Gaal’s men went down 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium. The goals were scored by Bojan Krkic and the lethal Marco Arnautovic, who is expected to return for this fixture.

Speaking to the club’s website, manager Hughes said:

''The likes of Marko Arnautovic, Jon Walters and Glen Johnson missed out at the weekend because they weren't fit. They had a light session today and if they don't get a reaction to that they should be available."

On the other hand, manager Luis Van Gaal told journalists about today’s game:

"I'm not a stupid man. I'm an intelligent man and I cannot predict the atmosphere on Tuesday.’’

"I hope that we can give the same level of performance as against Derby.’’

Team news

Manchester United

Manchester United could introduce Michael Carrick to the starting lineup after coming in as a substitute in their previous game following a knee injury that kept him out of competitive football for four matches. The Red Devils will still miss the services of the influential Bastian Schweinsteiger for one more month due to a knee problem.

Stoke City

Defender Marc Wilson should be out for not less than three months after picking up a knee injury over the weekend. Although captain Ryan Shawcross is showing positive signs of recovery after a back injury, he may not be available for selection for today’s game.
