Manchester United are allegedly preparing a £75 million bid for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.

English Premier League champions Manchester United are set to offer a mind-blowing deal to German giants Bayern Munich for the services of their star forward Thomas Muller, reports the Daily Star. The deal is expected to be tabled in January as the Red Devils are desperately looking for a solution to their striking problem both in the Premier League and Champions League.

Last Wednesday, the 20-time Premier League winners failed to beat their Champions League opponents PSV, in a match they badly needed to win to proceed to the last round of 16. The goalless draw now puts the English side in a difficult position since they have to beat Wolfsburg away from home to proceed to the next round of the competition, a clear indication of their goal-scoring problems.

Former Bayern Munich coach Luis Van Gaal, who is the current Manchester United manager, congratulates Muller at the end of the UEFA Champions League first leg match against Inter Milan on February 23, 2011. The two could reunite at Old Trafford during the transfer window in January.

The shocking bid for Muller comes at a time when there are rumours circulating in various media houses, both in England and Germany, that Liverpool are also interested in the World Cup winner. But such a high offer would upset the Reds and frustrate their bid to sign the German star.

During the previous transfer window, he confessed in an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that the high wages offered by top Premier League clubs were irresistible.

 He explained:

"In the end, we should not forget that playing football is our job.''

"So people should accept that wages will always play a role in a player's decision-making.''

"Of course, the wages that are being paid in the Premier League are very tempting. It would be hypocrisy to deny that.''

"You have to look at the complete package to determine whether something is right for you.''

"What's good for you one day will not necessarily still be good for you the day after.''

"I know that a lot of German clubs are unhappy with the Premier League clubs' spending, but I think it is something good for all clubs in the end.''

"It can only be a good thing for football when clubs invest so much money."

The 26-year-old has scored five goals in the Champions League this season for Bayern Munich in five appearances and provided one assist. He has also featured for the German champions in the Bundesliga 13 times and scored 12 goals.
