Manchester United face a crucial home fixture against West Bromwich Albion in a game that will determine whether the Red Devils’ win over CSKA Moscow last Tuesday was by sheer luck or not.

This crucial fixture comes at a time when the host team are struggling to score goals in the league. The 20-time Premier League champions have failed to hit the back of the net in their last two league games.

Van Gaal’s philosophy has been met by sharp criticism, most recently during Man United’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace last Saturday. During the match, a section of fans kept on chanting:

''We are United! We want to attack!’’

This came after a series of ''boring’’ football from the Red Devils in their most recent games under Van Gaal. Before the 1-0 unconvincing win against their Champions League opponents on Tuesday, United had played more than 7 hours of football without scoring or conceding a goal. The fans at Old Trafford, including legendary midfielder Paul Scholes, have openly aired their frustration and concerns regarding Van Gaal’s philosophy. However, despite the ''boring’’ and ''uninspiring’’ style of play,  Manchester United sit at the fourth position in the Premier League, just four points off the top.

Player to watch: Saturday's fixture provides the perfect opportunity for Martial to rediscover his goal-scoring form.

Anthony Martial uplauds Man United fans

On the other hand, twelfth-placed West Brom were hammered 3-2 by Leicester City at home last weekend. The Foxes now lead Manchester United in the EPL log by a single point. Before the 3-2 defeat, Tony Pulis’ men had secured two consecutive wins against Sunderland and Norwich City.

If the home team plays the usual possessive football with little penetrative chances, The Baggies could use this opportunity to lock their defense line and hit them with quick counter-attacks.
