Nigeria’s u17 team beat their Mexican counterparts 4-2 to proceed to the finals of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2015 in Chile.

This was the second straight appearance in the finals for the Nigerians after winning the trophy in 2013. Kevin Magana netted the first goal of the match in the seventh minute after controlling a loose ball in the box and directing it into the net. Nigeria netted twice through Kelechi Nwakali and Orji Okwonkwo before the half-time whistle.

But Diego Cortes’ solo run from the flanks provided one of the greatest goals of the tournament. The Mexican picked the ball from 50 yards, dribbled past five defenders, and blasted it past the advancing Nigerian goalkeeper, who was already out of his line.

The wonder-goal, which was strikingly similar to Diego Maradona’s ''goal of the century'' against England in the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, sparked wild celebrations across the stadium. Nigeria equalized later through Osinachi Ebere and the unstoppable Victor Osimhen, who is the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals, scored the winner.

Diego Cortes was quoted as saying by FIFA.com after the match:

"I collected the pass, set off and just looked out for the gaps all the time. All of a sudden I was in front of goal and scored.

"Obviously I checked to see whether any of my team-mates were free but nobody was," he added before concluding:

"I don’t do that often, but it’s a great feeling."

Nigeria will now face Mali in an all-African final on Sunday.
