However, some sources claim that Real Madrid have not given up on signing the Spaniard, despite his new deal.

After months of a lengthy transfer saga, David De Gea has finally committed his future to Manchester United, putting pen to paper on a new deal.

The Spanish goalkeeper old contract was due to expire next year, with La Liga giants Real Madrid keen on luring the 24-year-old to Santiago Bernabeu.

The Red Devils recruited Argentine shot-stopper Sergio Romero over the summer, as De Gea’s exit appeared inevitable, that is until confusion over filled paperwork saw the proposed transfer fall apart on deadline day.

It was previously reported that Rafael Benitez’s crew were afraid of this outcome, De Gea signing a new contract at Old Trafford, would occur, and thus wrote up a clause which would still see the Furia Roja international pocket salary from Les Merengues even if the deal were to collapse.

However, Real Madrid’s fears came true, and now the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper will remain in England until 2019, with an option to extend the deal for an extra year.

De Gea, having arrived back in 2011, amassing 175 appearances, expressed his joy and dedication to carry on his career with the 20-time English Premier League champions, telling their official website

“I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans. Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.”

I feel proud to announce that I'll continue with you and Manchester United. THANKS for your unconditional support!Me...

Manager Louis Van Gaal was also glad to see De Gea sign a new deal, saying:

“I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come. David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s Player of the Year for the last two seasons. He is a popular player who is keen to learn and enhance his game. At such a young age for a goalkeeper, he has many years ahead of him.”

Some sources claim, however, that Real Madrid will not give up on De Gea, despite being tied down with a four-year deal.
