Ever since 1999, when the U.S. hosted the tournament, they had not won it, and came as close as being runner-ups in 2011 against Japan. Nine of the players from that team were back to take revenge on the Japanese side. After missing many of their chances in previous games, this Sunday they were close to perfect.

Carli Lloyd scored the fastest hat-trick in the history of a World Cup final. Even before the 15th minute of action, the USWNT was already leading 4-0 with three goals from Lloyd and one from Lauren Holiday. Not even coach Jill Ellis could believe what she was seeing.

A total of five goals were scored in the first half, and another two dropped in the second half. One from each side, so before the hour, fans at B.C. Place Stadium had already witnessed seven goals, which is the most in World Cup history. The five goals scored by the Americans got them past Germany in a very special list.

The last 30 minutes of the game lacked of goals but there were certain aspects that made it special. Christie Rampone, a 40-year-old veteran got to play in the final minutes of the match, and win her second World Cup title. Abby Wambach also went in to play what could have been her final World Cup minutes. Together they lifted the trophy.

This was a moment 16-years in the making

When the final whistle blew, you could see the excitement in many of the players. Alex Morgan shed some tears, while some of the younger players enjoyed the moment at its fullest. An experience they hope to repeat in France four years from now.
