Team NewsCesare Prandelli will make a number of changes to his side since they were beaten by Uruguay in their latest friendly match. The Brazilian Football Association (CBF) announced that the South Americans have confirmed five friendly matches against Bosnia, Denmark, the United States, Mexico and Argentina.
From start to finish, the Americans always looked favorites to carry the day and thus grab quarter-finals tickets. Three fantastic volleys, from O’Reilly, Rapinoe and Lloyd sent debutants Colombia home. The South Americans may blame lack of experience for their defeat.
Group C: United States, North Korea, Colombia, Sweden
United States may be the favorites to prevent Germany from clinching their third Women’s World Cup trophy in a row. However, they have a tough task moving forward. The USA have fallen in an interesting group which contains North Korea.
Note that this Asian nation has made some serious progress in Women’s Football down the line and they are now considered to be a great threat. The Americans have certainly not forgotten what happened during China 2007—when North Korea gave them a real scare before an O-Reilly goal midway through the second half earn the USA a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
United States – the country, the football
Referred to as either the USA, the United States, or the US, this federal constitutional republic has a federal district and 50 different states which all have their star on the nation’s blue, white, and red flag. It is among the top 5 largest country in the world in terms of total area. It is also ranked third among the most populated countries with over 300 million inhabitants.
Like most countries around the world, the United States of America have a very long history. However theirs is long in terms of episodes, not in terms of the number of generations that have come and passed away in time.
Group C - The favorites at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa
England
The power-packed English side – filled with Premier League stars – will hope to emerge as ever-running lions at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. Historically, England have never won a World Cup trophy overseas, but this time, they’ll strive to break the curse which is following them. The Three Lions had an impressive campaign in their qualification for the tournament, scoring 34 goals to finish as top scorers in the European qualifying zone. Famous striker Wayne Rooney was a key to this success, and his combinations with other aces such as Defoe, Gerrard, Lampard, and Terry should normally push the English all the way through the quarter-finals at least.
USA previously appeared in top competitions, but they have never been successful in marking their presence in tournaments with silverwares. Their best World Cup record came in 1930 when they finished in third place, while they were also bronze medalists at the 1992 and 1999 Confederations Cups.
In the 2006 German World Cup, USA were disqualified in the group stage following losses to the Czech Republic and Ghana. They however got the chance to experience a vital preparation for the competition in South Africa, as they featured in the 2009 Confederations Cup after winning the CONCACAF Championship.
Honduras
Two defeats in September obviously didn’t help Honduras in their campaign. They now seat third behind the leaders USA and Mexico.
As things stand, Honduras are just inside the automatic qualification zone above fourth-placed Costa Rica.
According to Wigan Athletic’s Figueroa, his country’s hopes of reaching its first World Cup finals in over twenty-four years are well alive.
The USA are arguably CONCACAF’s most illustrious and giant team, having won the tournament five times since its creation in 1991.
The USA will try to protect their authority in this competition by winning the title for the third consecutive time.
The Yankees are fresh from a remarkable adventure in the Confederations Cup tournament. The CONCACAF proved that losing twice on the trot in the group stages doesn’t mean goodbye.Luck might have played a part in the USA’s wonderful qualification into the finals of the just ended Confederations Cup tournament. Unfortunately, it was also taking away from them in the final match against Brazil.
The Yankees stunned El Salvador on March 28 with a spirited comeback, rising from 2-0 down after 72 minutes to level 2-2 with only three minutes of normal time remaining. The United States then went on to trample Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 on April 1st, thanks to Jozy Altidore’s hat-trick. These two results, which kept the USA at the top of the CONCACAF qualifying group with seven points, have by all means revealed the true side of the Yankees’ strength in mentality. This is a united team where belief and determination to reach the skies are two living notions.
USA’s captain, Bocanegra, praised the efforts of the country’s national team while speaking to Fifa.com: “We have won our two home games (against Mexico then Trinidad & Tobago) but we were disappointed with the draw in El Salvador. It just shows that on the world stage, the supposed smaller countries are not easy to play against.”
