West Ham United v Liverpool FC
Liverpool defeated Newcastle’s underdog spirit at Anfield last Sunday to add fuel to their blistering desire of clinching the English Premiership title for the first time in eighteen years. The Merseyside Reds cannot afford to drop anymore points as they lay three points behind Manchester United who have a game in hand, and with only three matches remaining in the race for domestic glory.
Coach Rafael Benitez takes his side to West Ham this weekend with nothing else in mind than getting another three points against these Londoners. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.tv, defender Aurelio revealed his hopes and dreams of doing well in the next games:
"We know that Manchester United still have a game in hand, so our ambition is to finish well in our last three games and after that we will see where we end up,"
"The next game at West Ham is really important. If we win we can go top again, so we need to keep the pressure on ahead of their match with Man City.
"They still have a couple of difficult games left so let's see what happens and try and take it to the final game of the season."
Having scored 26 goals in their last 8 Premiership matches since their 2-0 loss to Middlesbrough, the pressure is on West Ham’s defense to reorganize.
The Hammers haven’t conceded much though, but statistics also show that they’ve manage only four victories in as many as 13 games since the month of March. A goalless draw against Liverpool – like in December last year – will be acceptable for Gianfranco Zola’s men who are still striving to keep their seventh spot for Europa qualification. West Ham are standing stiff competition from Manchester City who play their Mancunian rivals on Sunday, with only one point separating them from the Sky Blues.
However, manager Zola is still up for the challenge:
“The desire to get to our position is very important. It is vital,” the West Ham United boss told the press.
“We are going to be fighting very hard to get it. We will see in the end.”
Well, Liverpool will have the chance to overtake Manchester United at the top of the league for at least 24 hours if they win at West Ham. The English Premier League defending champions play their Mancunian rivals Manchester City on Sunday only.
The Reds could welcome Fernando Torres back in the squad while Xabi Alonso and Mascherano might also be fit to play.
Such a strong line up for this weekend’s game (with Steven Gerrard back from injury) may rekindle Benitez’s hopes of winning the league title, but the Spaniard is also realistic:
"We know they (United) are a good team with good players," said Rafa.
"They have to make two big mistakes, but we have to be ready. We have to try and get three points in each match and see if they feel under pressure and make mistakes.
"We have to win our games. It is the only solution for us - keep winning games and put them under pressure.
