Manchester United v Manchester City Preview
Four games remain before Manchester United complete their Premiership campaign and only three points separate them from nearest title challengers Liverpool. The Red Devils have a game in hand though – which gives them a bigger advantage over Rafael Benitez’s Merseyside Reds. Next up on the agenda is Sunday’s most anticipated derby clash against billionaires Manchester City at Old Trafford.
The Mancunian battle could come up as arguably the greatest Manchester United v Manchester City clash in these last six years as the outcome of this game will have a lot of impact on each team’s fate this season.
The pressure is on the Abu Dhabi’s Sky Blues billionaires to deliver in these last moments of the campaign with their Europa Cup dream still very much alive, while on the red side of Manchester, the tension is rising in the battle at the top of the league.
Big guns such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Edwin Van der Sar, Berbatov and Paul Scholes were all excluded from the Manchester United side that defeated Middlesbrough 2-0 in yet another important fixture; these players were rested on the bench for the European Champions’ next trip to Arsenal in London.
With Liverpool also winning at the weekend with an emphatic – yet controversial – 3-0 victory over Alan Shearer’s Newcastle United, the message has been well understood. Liverpool will fight until their last breath to put the pressure on Manchester United and possibly win the English Premiership title.
The recently crowned PFA Player of the Year, Ryan Giggs, insists that Manchester United have nothing to take for granted:
"We just wanted to get this one out of the way,” the Welshman said after the Boro game.
“We’ve done that and now we’ve just got to concentrate on the remaining games, because Liverpool are a good side and they’ll definitely fight to the end."
In-form Manchester City ready for the fight
Manchester City may have endured many lows this season, and certainly, their disappointment at the fact that money doesn’t buy success cannot hide.
However, the Sky Blues have shown how resilient they can be at times although they are surely far from reaching the Big Four’s standard.
Manchester City trampled Arsenal 3-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium and lost by only a single goal against rivals Manchester United in the first leg of this fixture.
The Sky Blues are of touching distance from West Ham who host Liverpool this weekend. The Mancunian Blues are only one point behind the Londoners and with three games to go, there is a real possibility for Manchester City to grab the seventh place that will see them go to Europe next season. However, this will require them to do some wonders.
Marc Hughes’ boys will be boosted by an excellent 3-0 thrashing of Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn Rovers last Saturday and they’d love to repeat such a success at the Theatre of Dreams.
City’s Belgium star Vincent Kompany is confident ahead of the mighty mancunian derby.
"That's the fourth win in a row, including the Hamburg tie at home, and we have proved that we are a good side.” Kompany insisted.
“We are doing what we need to do before a big game for us at United.
Manchester City’s ace Steven Ireland also communicated his readiness ahead of the derby clash.
"We're all feeling strong at this stage of the season, rather than taking a dip, which is a brilliant feeling
“We want to end on a high, and right now I feel the best I have ever felt. I feel fitter now than before, I am coming off at the end of games feeling that I could have run so much more. I hope that I feel the same going into the derby".
It’s a game that could go either way and the winner of this encounter will certainly be the team with the strongest mentality rather than the team with the best performance on the day. Otherwise, these calibers could fall to only one team that will surely triumph at the end of the ninety minutes.
