Birmingham City vs Liverpool Match Preview
Belarus international midfielder Alexander Hleb has joined Birmingham on loan from Barcelona. The former Arsenal man spent last season on loan at Stuttgart. Given his ball control and dribbling skills he should bring a little bit of spice to the Blues’ attack. Birmingham boss Alex McLiesh has also signed Chilean international midfielder Jean Beausejour on a 3-year, £4m deal. Spartak Moscow defender Martin Jiranek joins on a 1-year deal to bolster the Birmingham defense.
Liverpool’s Dutch midfielder Dirk Kuyt will miss a few weeks following an injury to his shoulder while on duty with the Netherlands squad. David Ngog is expected to be available at the weekend despite a hamstring problem that saw him withdrawn from the France Under-21 squad. Defender Paul Konchesky comes over from Fulham; his arrival will make up for the departure of defender Emiliano Insua, who has gone to Galataseray. Konchesky will link up at Anfield with former Fulham boss Roy Hodgson. Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic have gone in the opposite direction as part of the deal.
Birmingham City vs Liverpool Match Report
Paul Konchesky started in defense for Liverpool following his recent transfer from Fulham. With Mascherano now gone there’s room in the midfield for new signing Christian Poulsen. Dirk Kuyt’s shoulder injury has ruled him out of action for a while and Joe Cole is still suspended.
It was all about Pepe Reina, however, as his agility and anticipation prevented a determined Birmingham squad from breaching his goal on several occasions.
A header by Cameron Jerome in the 23rd minute was Reina’s first opportunity to prove heroic as he dived right to stop a difficult downward strike and keep a clean score sheet.
Reina kept his team in it with another fine save when he courageously contested a cross intended for the head of Jerome once again. The Spanish keeper got there just in time to punch the ball clear.
Liverpool had a claim for a penalty in the 37th when Roger Johnson took Torres down deep in the penalty box. Johnson may just have touched the ball first, thus legitimizing his challenge, but it was very close and the physicality of the tackle made referee Mark Halsey’s decision to play on a surprising one.
On the counterattack a Craig Gardner header seemed destined for the Liverpool net but once again Reina reigned supreme, and got down to the ball to save it.
The first half ended scoreless and both sides kept the same line-ups as the second half began.
Birmingham played well, with James McFadden, Cameron Jerome and Graig Gardner all looking dangerous. Paul Konchesky played well for Liverpool on his debut, until a knee injury forced him off.
New Liverpool signing and Portugal international midfielder Raul Meireles came on for Lucas late in the game; he looks to have an attacking mindset, and found himself involved in Liverpool’s offensive efforts on a number of occasions.
Still, new look Liverpool were unable to deconstruct a resolute Birmingham, whose defensive combination of Scott Dann, Roger Johnson and Liam Ridgewell seem just as miserly this year as last, and seldom allowed Liverpool to worry goalkeeper Ben Foster.
In the end the 0-0 draw was probably a fair result, although nobody could have complained had Birmingham taken the three points on the day.
