Fulham vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Match Report
Fulham beat Wolves 2-1 but despite the three points it was something close to a pyrrhic victory since striker Bobby Zamora suffered a broken leg in the match and will likely miss four months.
Wolves took an early lead in what would prove to be a bruising battle on the pitch. Against the run of play Jelle van Damme got on the end of a Kevin Doyle cross to snatch the opening goal after just 10 minutes.
Zamora’s injury came at the half hour mark when he was tackled by Wolves Captain Karl Henry. The challenge was clearly a robust one, but probably fair and Zamora’s misfortune unintentional.
But Fulham manager Mark Hughes’ sagacity was proven as his first signing for his new club, Moussa Dembele got the equalizer in the 49th minute.
An accumulation of six yellow cards and a red to Wolves (to Christophe Berra) gives some idea of their full-blooded approach to the match. Referee Phil Dowd was subjected to heavy criticism from Fulham fans, players and Mark Hughes alike for his inability to control the opposition’s tactics as well as his failure to award penalty kicks to Fulham on two occasions.
Nevertheless, Dembele took advantage of Berra’s late dismissal and struck a low free kick that passed under the Wolverhampton defensive wall to give Fulham the win and the three points in stoppage time.
