The Brazilian's ankle could take longer than initially expected to heal, risking the man's presence in the 2018 World Cup.

The worst news for Brazil and PSG fans arrived today from the South American country, as Neymar is set to miss the rest of the season with Les Parisiens due to a broken toe. But it doesn't stop there, as the world's most expensive footballer could miss out on the World Cup.

Rodrigo Lesmar,  the doctor in charge of Neymar's surgery, revealed that the initial forecast was too optimistic, stating that it could take up to three months to have the player back on the pitch.

"It's a major fracture to a bone in his right foot. He's sad, but he understands it's the best way to treat such an injury. He'll focus on his recovery and we'll try to have him fit as quickly as possible," Lesmar explained.

Neymar got off the plane on a wheel chair.

The current Ligue 1 season ends on May 20, ruling out the possibility of a comeback by the Brazilian ace. With his expected return date being June 1, his presence in the World Cup would be in serious jeopardy, as he will lack match fitness for such a relevant tournament.

Lesmar explained why PSG and himself got the first diagnosis wrong.

"A fracture of this sort is not easy to diagnose. The best and only solution is to operate, since taking a more conservative approach leaves a window open for a quick relapse. That's a risk we can't afford," the doctor added.
