Just as always, the oldest football competition in the world, the FA Cup, served up some fascinating games and results. While Chelsea and Manchester United sailed through to the quarter-finals peacefully, Manchester City suffered a shock eviction at the hands of Wigan and Tottenham drew at Rochdale to set up a replay at Wembley.
After the midweek's Champions League action for some of the clubs, the English Premier League is back in full swing with interesting games to look forward to.
Mahrez eyes return to starting lineup vs Stoke
Riyad Mahrez is back from his mini-exile and is aiming to secure a spot in Claude Puel’s starting lineup as the Foxes host Paul Lambert’s Stoke. The Algerian winger featured against Manchester City on Matchday 27 but failed to make any significant contribution having entered the fray while the side he was purportedly moving to in January was enjoying a 3-1 lead.
His Leicester side has been heading downhill since his sabbatical, with the Foxes gaining just a point in their last three games. The 2016 Premier League winners are currently placed eighth on the league log with just nine points separating them and the relegation zone.
Nonetheless, Mahrez’s return to the starting XI at the King Power Stadium could be a huge boost coming up against a Stoke City side that is currently battling relegation in the 19th position.
Mane, Firmino, and Mo Salah to capitalize on West Ham’s rollercoaster form?
After being devoid of any competitive game in the last 10 days, the Liverpool trio should be reeling to lay waste their lethargic North London visitors. The aforementioned players were key entities in the Reds’ goal feast at Porto in the UEFA Champions League.
Sadio Mane, especially, stole the show by taking the match ball home with his hattrick whereas Firmino and Salah complimented the former Southampton man’s efforts with a goal apiece to seal the 5:0 victory. The attacking trident comes into the weekend’s Premier League game against West Ham with an accumulation of 63 goals in all competitions this season – the best tally among any trio in European football at the moment.
With David Moyes’ men struggling to hit a level of consistency, it may as well be another exhibition for the in-form Liverpool forwards. Jurgen Klopp's side is currently place third with 54 points and a win will push them the second place before Manchester United plays Chelsea on Sunday.
Kane chases 20th EPL away goal at Crystal Palace
The Tottenham Hotspur forward has slowly established himself as a world-class forward game after game in recent seasons. His prowess was witnessed again in matches against Juventus and Rochdale after he inspired his side from a losing position to clinch respective draws in the Champions League and the FA Cup.
Highlighting the domestic league, Spurs have gained momentum to fight for a top-four spot after failing to put a foot wrong since the 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in December. On Saturday, Tottenham will travel to Selhurst Park with just a point behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
The free-scoring goal poacher, Harry Kane, will subsequently aim to help his side leapfrog the Blues by reaching a milestone of 20 away goals in 15 away games. The English forward is currently the league’s top scorer with 23 goals after 26 games.
Nonetheless, it will be a tough one to call with Crystal Palace also fighting at the bottom half of the table to stay clear of the relegation zone.
Red vs Blue, Jose Mourinho vs Antonio Conte
It is the last one but certainly the biggest one yet. There will be no love lost when both Manchester United and Chelsea come face-to-face in the Super Sunday showdown. Aside the main battle that will take place on the pitch, a side attraction which could be served up features Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
The two managers have been involved in a war of words in recent times and have become sworn nemesis as a result. Nonetheless, the stakes are high for the respective managers with both aiming to consolidate their Champions League spots with wins.
Jose Mourinho has been on the receiving end of criticisms for his ‘unfair’ treatment of Paul Pogba whereas Antonio Conte is tirelessly battling to get the blessings of the Chelsea hierarchy with a rumored exit lingering in the pipeline after he supposedly fell victim to Jose’s “mind-games”.
With both managers having a lot to prove, it needs no telling as to how pivotal the game is. Going into the encounter, a big question that has emerged is how Jose will manage to silence the in-form Eden Hazard with Ander Herrera, who was once tasked with a man-marking mission, likely to miss the game with an injury.
Other than that, the Red Devils have enough firepower in their attacking artillery to neutralize what the Belgian forward and his band might bring on board. Still, Mourinho’s uneven record against the top six clubs in England raises skepticism as to whether his team can deal with the taunts of an Antonio Conte side that held Barcelona to a draw in mid-week. Game on!
