The Copa Uruguay, also known as the Copa AUF Uruguay, is a knockout competition between Uruguayan teams from all categories. The only precedent to this competition happened in 1969, but the idea of a cup tournament for Uruguayan teams was dismissed until 2022, when teams from all professional categories urged the Uruguayan Football Association (or AUF) to create a tournament of the sort. The competition is played during the second half of the calendar year and grants a spot to play in the Supercopa Uruguaya.
The format of the competition makes it possible to invite both amateur and professional teams, with up to 80 spots available to play in the tournament. The preliminary stage consists mostly of amateur teams, who will battle to earn one of 12 spots available to play the next round. The winners go on to the first round, where 12 teams from the Segunda División are waiting to have a one-leg tie with them. The winners of those games, along with twenty clubs from regional leagues, the Copa Nacional de Clubes, and all the Primera División squads earn a spot in the Third Round, which kicks off the proper tournament.
Once all teams are drawn, the competition will see them battling for a spot in the next round via a one-leg playoff, with penalties being used to determine the winner. The semifinals and the title clash are held at a neutral venue outside of Montevideo, but if one of the teams involved is either Peñarol or Nacional, then tournament final is held at Estadio Centenario.
The winner of the competition is awarded a spot in the Supercopa Uruguaya. Added to that, there is a monetary prize for the amateur team that goes the furthest into the tournament.
Defensor Sporting have gone down in history as the first-ever champion, beating La Luz in the title match for the 2022 edition.
