Preview

Manchester City resume their Premier League title defense on Thursday after witnessing some interesting results from title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool over the past few days. However, the Cityzens will be in for a tough test of their own as Guardiola's side visit Brighton for a highly-anticipated 3 p.m. ET showdown live on USA Network and Universo.

Manchester City were top of the table this time last week. However, due to their FA Cup obligations, Haaland and Co. have now been leapfrogged by both Arsenal and Liverpool in the standings.

While the Cityzens played Chelsea in the FA Cup semifinals on Saturday, the Gunners and the Merseyside giants were in action in the English top flight, beating Wolves and Fulham in their respective fixtures to relegate Guardiola's side to third in the table.

Additionally, both Arsenal and Liverpool played again during the midweek, with Arteta's men hosting Chelsea while Salah and Co. visited Everton for Jurgen Klopp's final Merseyside Derby. However, while Arsenal beat their London rivals 5-0, thus leaving Manchester City four points adrift of the league leaders, Liverpool lost 2-0, thus derailing their title hopes.

While form seems to favor Arsenal, the Cityzens are fully aware of one key fact: win their remaining six games and Manchester City will lift the Premier League title for a fourth straight season. While the defending champions do have some tricky fixtures remaining, namely Brighton, Tottenham, and West Ham, this is achievable.

However, the Cityzens' recent performance against Chelsea could sow a seed of doubt among the Etihad Stadium faithful. While Haaland and Co. ultimately won 1-0 to set up an FA Cup final rematch with Manchester United, Pep's men were fortunate to get past the London giants and appeared physically knackered following another grueling fixtures list.

Chelsea had the better opportunities and would have gone through had it not been for Nicolas Jackson's profligacy in front of goal. Meanwhile, both Pep Guardiola and Bernardo Silva bemoaned the scheduling of this fixture following the full-time whistle and highlighted the toll it had on the players' welfare.

Regardless, the away side have not lost a Premier League fixture in nearly five months, with City's last top-flight defeat being the 1-0 loss at Aston Villa on December 6. Can Brighton bring an end to this amazing run?

Unlike Manchester City, Brighton have been enduring a rough 2024 amid an injury crisis and speculation regarding the future of their highly-rated head coach Roberto de Zerbi. In fact, the Seagulls have won only three league fixtures this calendar year and are facing an uphill battle to qualify for Europe next season.

Those victories came against Crystal Palace as well as relegation battlers Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest. However, De Zerbi's men are winless in their last four fixtures, suffering defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal while drawing away to Brentford and Burnley.

Brighton's last two fixtures in particular have been rough. De Zerbi's men were first dismantled by the Gunners, losing 3-0 at the Amex thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and the returning Leandro Trossard before needing a comical own goal from Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric to pick up a point against the Clarets.

As a result, Gross and Co. currently find themselves 11th in the table with 44 points to their name. Brighton have games in hand over Bournemouth, West Ham, and Newcastle, who are all ahead of them in the table, which means a top-half finish is still possible for the Seagulls.

Team news

Brighton: Solly March, Kaoru Mitoma, Jack Hinshelwood, James Milner, Tariq Lamptey, Billy Gilmour, Evan Ferguson, and Pervis Estupinan are all injured. Meanwhile, Enciso is fighting against the clock to be fit. Fortunately, Adam Webster is back in contention.

Manchester City: The visitors will be without top scorer Erling Haaland, who also missed the FA Cup semifinal vs. Chelsea. Phil Foden and John Stones, however, should be fit for this tie despite missing training. Question marks linger over Bernardo Silva, who complained of hamstring and calf issues when hitting out at the FA.

Key stats

  • Manchester City are on a 17-game unbeaten run.

  • Additionally, the Cityzens have won 11 of their last 13 encounters with Brighton (D1, L1).

  • The Seagulls have kept only five clean sheets all season in the Premier League.

  • Phil Foden's favorite team to score against is Brighton, netting six goals against the Seagulls in his career.
