FIFA Ballon d'Or 2010: Xavi Hernandez - Video Highlights
Lines of analysis and descriptions are not needed in this article, as its purpose is actually to refresh the minds of readers through video highlights recapping Xavi Hernandez’s greatest moments of the year 2010. More specifically, the highlights shown in this Ballon d’Or 2010 article emphasize Xavi’s skills on the field—with particular focus on his precision and intelligence in various types of passes.
The following video of 8 minutes and 12 seconds has its focal point on Xavi’s indispensable influence in the Spanish national team during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Just watch, and enjoy…
Looking back on a year purely from a football perspective can be much easier if there was a World Cup or European Championship that year. The English contingent have always been the most strident in dismissing the virtue of international football -- not least because England are not very good, and dismissing a movement or a cause because of personal shortcomings is a repellent posture -- but they and many others definitely have a point.Somos el numero uno

Spain have made it to their first FIFA World Cup Finals. For the Netherlands this is their third time. Neither country have ever won the World Cup. This reminds me of that old saying: "third time lucky". Another first is that no European nation has ever won the World Cup final outside of Europe. For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, an European nation will win the World Cup on foreign soil.
After reviewing all the team and player match stats from both Holland and Spain, we thought we´d highlight some of the stats related to both 2010 World Cup Finalists.
Fouls & Indiscipline - Advantage Netherlands
Netherlands are the fouling champions. They have commited more fouls than any other team in this World Cup. On the flip-side, Spain are the team that suffer the most fouls - 106 thus far this World Cup tournament. This looks like a recipe for alot of fouls by Netherlands on Spain. However, Spain are a better tackling team with 14 tackles vs 9 from the Netherlands.
The dutch have the worst disciplinary record of all 32 teams in the tournament: 15 yellow cards. Spain are the most disciplined team having only suffered 3 yellow cards in all their matches. One more than North Korea who only played 3 games. This may be a field day for Howard Webb. Let´s hope this englishman can count.
Klose got his name on the scoring sheet for Germany in the 2010 World Cup on match-day 1 against Australia, and he also clinched a goal against England in the DFB Eleven’s humiliating 4-1 triumph in the Round of 16. The Bayern Munich superstar has however revealed that he was eyeing team success ahead of Germany’s match against Uruguay, rather than individual achievement.
“The first thing I want is to win against Uruguay,” he said. “Even if I don’t...
Carles Puyol’s headed goal against Germany was the Spanish answer to the burden of history: it propelled Spain to their first World Cup Final, and also went a long way to shedding the anachronistic tag of ‘underachievers’ that pundits habitually bestow upon them. Spain’s triumph at Euro2008 was only a partial vindication; to be truly regarded as a superpower in the world game, they have to beat the Netherlands on July 11th.
Of course, what makes the Final even more intriguing is that the Netherlands have never won the World Cup either. They played bridesmaids on two occasions, however. In 1974, the Cruyff-led team fell to Germany, while in 1978 they were vanquished by Argentina. The last moment of glory for the Dutch came in 1988, when they were crowned European Champions. Both Spain and Netherlands, then, enter the Final on Sunday as two upstarts who elbowed their way through the establishment of Brazil, Germany, and England to sit at the ceremonial table. They will argue that the jostling for prominence on Sunday will be between two eminently deserving teams. And few could argue against them.
The first semi final was an open game until the last minute. With a clear presence of both sides in the midfield, Netherlands' individual capabilities turned to be enough to get the Dutch a place in the final. Diego Forlan was once again Uruguay's hero, though this time there will be no Charruas left to sing his gloryA clockwork Orange
Both teams, undefeated, will have to fight for a place in the final. Uruguay's martyr Luis Suarez -the player most familiar with Dutch football in the squad- will be unable to perform, while Netherlands will have to do without De Jong and Van der Wiel, Will Oscar Tabarez's squad be able to defeat Brazil's executioners without his Lion?
Writing history
Uruguay has made it once again to the latter stages of a World Championship, but the players are not satisfied with the goal reached. "To write history is to lift the cup" were Uruguay's captain Diego Lugano's words when asked about the performance of the Celeste. Uruguay only took on Netherlands once in a world cup, back in 1974 when the Oranges won 2-0.
The game was fought head to head by both teams, with Paraguay dominating most of the time. Guarani's aerial superiority had to show their worth against Spain's uncanny ball possession skills, with Xabi Alonso and Xavi as their main referents. But Victor Caceres and Cristian Riveros were furious and fast, recovering most of the balls and keeping the pressure on the Spaniard side for most of the time. Jonathan Santana and Antolin Alcaraz had their chances against Fury's goal, for Paraguay's offensive strikers were keeping most of their rival's defense busy, giving spaces for Guarani's aerial masters to do what they do best.
Spain on the edge
Paraguay was having problems to control Spain specially from the right side, from where Andres Iniesta, Sergio Rios and Fernando Torres were constantly exchanging roles and confusing Albirroja's defense. David Villa was lonely on the left wing, but his presence has not been that particularly determinant in the first half thanks to a Paulo Da Silva's close personal mark.
Shortly after admitting to the officiating errors that led to England's legitimate goal being disalllowed or Argentina's offside goal being allowed against Mexico, it was clear that FIFA had taken steps to minimize ongoing media and public perception damage. "Replays can be shown but not when there are controversial situations. We will work on this and be tighter in future." says Nicola Maingot from FIFA. "It has worked so far very well. Last night was a mistake. It should not happen again," he added and it didn´t. Fast forward to the 63rd minute of the Spain and Portugal game and you would think that Villa's goal was 100% legitimate as video footage focused on the Spanish celebration. The video replay of the goal failed to highlight the start of the play which shows Villa in an offside position before Iniesta's pass.

Once again Brazil was the executioner of Chile in a World Championship, as they did back in 1962 and 1998. Chile suffered the absence of their main defenders (Waldo Ponce and Gary Medel) while Dunga could recover Robinho, Elano and Kaka for this match. Midfield's battle was clearly won by the Cariocas, who recovered 33 balls against 14 by the Chilean squad.

From Italy's ashes raised Tata Martino's squad, a team that relies heavily in the physical strengths of their players but that have also shown the importance of a solid strategy. Lucas Barrios will be playing its seventh match with the Albirroja; In the first three ones he managed to score and give Paraguay the three points, but in the tree matches played on African ground luck has been rather adverse for Borussia Dortmund's top scorer. Japan has become a stronger team in the last years, still owners of an unchallenged speed and technique, but now closer to European football, with fierce midfielders and powerful wingers. CSKA Moscow's midfielder Keisuke Honda is the offensive lighthouse of the strongest Asian team in this World Cup, will he be able to break Paraguay's sturdy defense?
There's a first time for everything
Loftus Versfeld will host one of the toughest matches in this round, for these two teams have both similar characteristics, having both received a huge morale boost thanks to a solid qualification in their groups. Paraguay has never advanced further than the Round of 16 in a World Championship, but as Chile and Uruguay, this year everything seems to be working as it should for South American squads. Gerardo Martino has found in Enrique Vera the playmaker his team was lacking, and the offensive trident Barrios-Haedo-Santa Cruz pose a threat to whatever rival the Guaranies have to face.
When the Italian national team flops at a major tournament (and as any Italy fan will tell you, “flop” means anything less than a semi-final appearance) there are at least some mitigating circumstances. Take for instance the 2002 World Cup loss to South Korea. Italy started the second round clash with Francesco Totti, Alessandro Del Piero, and Christian Vieri up front, a trident that, at the time, was considered peerless on the international stage. Italy lost 2-1 to a golden goal, but the acrimony surrounding the admittedly scandalous refereeing detracted from Italian shortcomings in general. Italian failure was accommodated by an almost unanimous appeal to the conspiratorial: Italy were ousted not necessarily by an inability to finish their chances, but by a corrupt Ecuadorian referee—Byron Moreno, for those who recall or are interested—who would be better off plying his trade in a remote village.
Maradona vs Mexico
Diego Maradona will be pumping up his Argentinian squad for their Round-of-16 match up with Aguirre's Mexico. Both teams are feeling confident as they can arguably be defined as the best national squads assembled possibly ever. Add to this positive showings thus far and the opportunity for the Mexicans to seek revenge in their last world cup 2006 match where they lost 2-1 to Argentina. It will certainly be a spicy latin affair. You can expect that both teams will go for the jugular.

Diego Maradona is leading Argentina to one of its best performances in the last decades. Three matches played, three victories and 7 goals scored, the Albiceleste is indeed a solid candidate for the title, but a step should be walked at a time, and to prove their worth they'll need to stand against Mexico's electric play. "We'll take revenge on what happened four years ago. We'll try to change the course of history and this time, a Mexican goal will please the crowds" were Tricolor's coach Javier Aguirre words regarding this match. For this matter Mexico is expected to display a versatile formation, with a three or four-man back line to strengthen midfield's play. Former Argentinean Guillermo Franco will be the only striker in the squad (Vera might join him if he fully recovers), forcing Giovani Dos Santos to put his wits to work to earn Mexico its first victory against Argentina in a World Championship.
Argentina vs Mexico: Maradona's illusion
During the first week in South Africa, Maradona declared the world championship won't begin until the round of 16, where "no mistakes will be allowed". Having found the perfect starting eleven after the first three matches, there have only been two modifications from the first match against Nigeria: Nicolas Otamendi has taken over Jonas Gutierrez place leading the advance in the right band, and Maxi Rodriguez - perhaps thanks to his background against Mexico, or maybe thanks to his superior speed - will be replacing Juan Sebastian Veron.

The big match-up has been built up as a Star Wars affair of the powers that be in World Soccer. Germany has a very young, physical and intense squad. They can be praised for playing high intensity efficient football. Despite a loss to Serbia where their star striker was sent off unjustly, it appears they are in peak condition at well regarded as favorites against England. The English are yet to find their top form. A pragmatic style of football enforced by Capello has hindered the English from displaying top form in the World Cup 2010 thus far. But there is nothing like a clash with a historic foe to liven and motivate up the English. They are as ready as they will ever be.
