Chelsea Manager Andre Villas-Boas Believes Team Are “On Course” After Dominant Champions League Performance

Thursday October 20 2011,
Tags: UEFA Champions League, Chelsea, Fernando Torres
Chelsea cruised to a dominant 5-0 win over KRC Genk that included a brace from Spanish striker Fernando Torres.
Raul Meireles, Branislav Ivanovic and Salomon Kalou also found the net as Chelsea stayed on top of UEFA Champions League Group E.

Torres showed an early sign of intent when he was released by Meireles only to divert his shot wide.

Meireles found himself un-pressured in the 8th minute in a central position, and punished Genk by firing home the opening goal past Laszlo Koteles.

Frank Lampard was soon involved three minutes later, when he also exploited space in midfield by feeding Torres to double Chelsea’s lead.

The Genk defense simply could not deal with the pace and movement of Torres, and he created a chance for Malouda, and also fired over himself before giving Chelsea a 3-0 lead at the 27 minute mark.

Dramatic Aaron Ramsey Winner Puts Arsenal Top of UEFA Champions League Group F

Tags: UEFA Champions League, Arsenal, Aaron Ramsey
A stoppage time winning goal from young Welshman Aaron Ramsey moved Arsenal above Olympique de Marseille at the top of Group F.
Sergio Aguero had given Manchester City victory the previous day with a stoppage time goal, and this time Ramsey stepped up to give Arsenal an equally dramatic victory.

The Gunners came into this game two points behind then group leaders Marseille, and now sit top and have given themselves a strong chance of progressing to the knockout rounds.

The first half was a cagey affair, with the biggest chance of note coming when Robin van Persie had a looping header cleared off the goal line by Souleymane Diawara.

Arsenal also created the first scoring chance of the second half when Theo Walcott’s low drive was saved well by Steve Mandanda.

Last Gasp Sergio Aguero Strike Keeps Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League Hopes Alive

Wednesday October 19 2011,
Tags: UEFA Champions League, Manchester CIty, Sergio Aguero
Sergio Aguero struck in the fourth minute of injury time to hand Manchester City a dramatic 2-1 win over Villarreal in Group A play.
City still sit outside the top two qualification spots in a difficult Group A, but are now only one point below second placed SSC Napoli.

Roberto Mancini had told the official UEFA website this week that this was a game his team would “need to win.” With those words ringing in their ears, it must have doubled the pressure when Villarreal took a 4th minute lead courtesy of Cani.

Joe Hart had saved a long range Giuseppe Rossi strike, but Spanish midfielder Cani was on hand to turn home the rebound.

City pressed forward in search of an equalizer, with Aleksandar Kolarov forcing Diego Lopez into a smart save from a free kick, before blazing another effort wide of the target.

Two penalties from England striker Wayne Rooney were the difference as Manchester United gained a crucial 2-0 win at SC Otelul Galati.
After getting their UEFA Champions League Group C campaign off to a sputtering start with two draws, United lifted themselves into second place with this victory.

United had the better of the early stages, but the first shot on goal came when Galati’s Bratislav Punosevac had his effort saved by Anders Lindegaard.

Good work by Portuguese winger Nani created United’s best chance but Michael Carrick fired high over the bar.

Galati had one more chance to break the deadlock before half-time, but Livlu Antal directed his header over the crossbar.

Rooney shot wide from United’s first chance of the second half, but then won a 64th minute penalty when his left wing cross was handled by Otelul defender Sergio Costin.

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid out to tame the demons of Olympique Lyon

Tuesday October 18 2011,
Tags: Iker Casillas, Jose Mourinho
The history between Real Madrid and Olympique Lyon is starting to change. Recent meetings between both sides ended in favor of Los Blancos.
Iker Casillas, who has participated in 8 previous UEFA Champions League encounters against Les Gones, is hoping to build on Real Madrid’s strength to cast the Lyon demons for good.

“They are uncomfortable rivals for us and they know they have our respect,” the Madrid captain told during the pre-match press conference.

“In the 2009/10 campaign they took an important step into the last eight at our expense but last year we ended our nightmare of not having advanced past the last 16 [in the six previous campaigns] and we did so against Lyon.”

Arsenal 2 – 1 Olympiacos: Alex Oxade-Chamberlain Investment Pays First Dividend

Thursday September 29 2011,
Tags: Arsenal, Alex Oxade-Chamberlain, UEFA Champions League
Arsenal moved into second place of UEFA Champions League Group F with an important 2-1 home win over Olympiacos.
Oxade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in the 8th minute when he collected the ball from Alex Song, dribbled across the penalty box and planted a crisp finish into the corner beyond Franco Costanzo.

Twelve minutes later, another of Arsene Wenger’s transfer deals paid off, when deadline day purchase Andre Santos charged forward from left back and was slid in by Tomas Rosicky. The cross of Santos was blocked, but the Brazilian defender was first to the rebound and fired home to double the Gunners lead.

In the 27th minute Olympiacos hit back to make the score 2-1, and Arsenal’s long standing weakness at set pieces continued. Ariel Ibagaza worked a short corner on the left flank and floated a cross to the back post. David Fuster met the ball and bundled it home for the Greek side.

Valencia 1 Chelsea 1: Frank Lampard’s Professionalism is in Stark Contrast to Idiotic Carlos Tevez

Thursday September 29 2011,
Tags: Chelsea, Frank Lampard, Carlos Tevez, UEFA Champions League
Chelsea earned a hard fought point to stay on top of UEFA Champions League Group E with a 1-1 draw at Valencia.
In a week where the selfish ego of Carlos Tevez has dominated headlines, it was noticeable that another star player who spent excessive time on the bench made a positive impact for the Blues.

Lampard has found himself on the bench more often than he would like for both club and country of late, but the midfielder is choosing to act like a grown man and fight for his place like a true professional.

A few tabloid newspapers chose to highlight the fact that Lampard headed to the dressing room five minutes before the end of Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Swansea City. Sadly, while they were busy trying to create a scandal, those newspapers neglected to mention the fact that Lampard put himself through a full training session on the Stamford Bridge pitch that night immediately after the game.

Man United 3-3 Basel: Fergie orders Red Devils’ midfield & defense to improve

Wednesday September 28 2011,
Tags: FC Basel, UEFA Champions League, Alex Ferguson
There were mixed emotions for Manchester United on Tuesday night as FC Basel held the hosts to a 3-3 draw.
It all started very easily for Manchester United; they broke the deadlock after only 16 minutes. It came through a fine combination from Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen and Ryan Giggs. Danny Welbeck was left in the box to put the ball past the goal line.

The English youngster doubled his tally a minute later as Manchester United looked sure to triumph on the night. But FC Basel responded well. Within a 2-minute spell after the break, the visitors went leveled.

First, Fabian Frei issued the comeback with a goal from a corner. Alexander Frei was then allowed too much space to make it 2-2.

BATE vs Barcelona: Time for Barca to catch up in the UEFA Champions League

Wednesday September 28 2011,
Tags: Lionel Messi, Pep Guardiola
Barcelona’s failure to remain consistent this month has prevented them from topping the UEFA Champions League’s Group H, but a perfect fixture against BATE could solve their problem.
It was actually their bitter 2-2 draw with Milan at the Camp Nou that took away from them two precious points at the very beginning of their Champions League campaign. Luckily for them, BATE and Viktoria Plzeň also shared a point on the first matchday, keeping them in a good position to rise in the table.

Perhaps, it would be right to look upon their intimidating victory in La Liga over the weekend as a preview of their subsequent battle in Europe. Nevertheless, the fact that they will be facing BATE Borisov away from home somehow reduces their chances of repeating the stunning show they put on against Atletico Madrid.

Internazionale coach Gasperini facing the sack following poor run

Wednesday September 21 2011,
Tags: Massimo Moratti, UEFA Champions League, Gasperini
Nothing is going right for Internazionale and club president Massimo Moratti is now considering the option of sacking Gian Piero Gasperini.
The coach was tasked to do better than Leonardo with whom Inter won the 2011 Coppa Italia. As of now, however, Gasperini has not shown good signs. Losing 4-3 to Palermo on the first match-day of the Serie A was never a good way to kick-off the domestic campaign.

On Tuesday night, the Nerazzurri suffered a major blow through a heartbreaking 3-1 defeat against Novara. Riccardo Meggiorini’s first half goal put the hosts under pressure to score but when Marco Rigoni found the back of the net through the penalty spot inside the 86th minute, Inter’s chances of winning the match got baffled.

Esteban Cambiasso did put his side back into the game 3 minute later but it was too little, too late. Rigoni completed his brace at the 90th minute as the visitors went home with nothing in the bag.

Manchester United gradually occupying Barcelona’s extra-terrestrial planet

It looks like extra-terrestrial Barcelona are no more alone on their out-of-this-world planet. The new generation of Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils seems to have joined the Catalans up there.

Wayne Rooney is at the centre of a very bright future for Manchester United's new generationA Barcelona-Manchester United matchup in the UEFA Champions League final this season will arguably confirm this opinion. The two powerhouses have met twice in only 3 European finals since 2009 with results explaining that Barcelona remain a mile ahead of Manchester United.

Bitter memories… the two games that pushed Man United to become a better team

What Red Devils supporters witnessed at the Stadio Olimpico in 2009 was rather humiliating. How did the good old Fergie seem so lost in tactics against a manager as inexperienced—yet cunning—as Pep Guardiola?

Ryan Giggs Continues on the Path to Becoming the Greatest Manchester United Player Ever

Thursday September 15 2011,
Tags: Ryan Giggs, Manchester United, UEFA Champions League
Manchester United began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw at Benfica, and it was a very familiar name on the score sheet.
Benfica took the lead through Paraguay international striker Oscar Cardozo, but the legendary Ryan Giggs struck just before half-time to earn a point for the Red Devil’s.

Much of the attention on United’s awesome start to the season has been focused on the ‘new breed’ at Old Trafford that is rife with young and exciting talent.

Young defenders Phil Jones and Jonny Evans have played well in front of 20 year-old goalkeeper David De Gea. In midfield Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley have produced a vibrant and attacking brand of football that is complimenting a lethal attack.

At the spearhead of United’s lineup, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez are firing in the goals, with Rooney a relative greybeard at the age of 25.

Juan Settles the Mata as Chelsea Get Champions League Campaign off to a Winning Start

Thursday September 15 2011,
Tags: Juan Mata, Chelsea, UEFA Champions League
A late goal from Juan Mata put the seal on a convincing 2-0 win for Chelsea over Bayer Leverkusen in their Group E
Chelsea had the better of a scoreless first half during which both teams had goals disallowed. Fernando Torres first had the ball in the net only for Raul Meireles to be called offside, before Leverkusen defender Omer Toprak had a goal ruled out for a foul on Florent Malouda.

Leverkusen goalkeeper Leno also saved well from Torres and Daniel Sturridge to keep the scores level going into the break.

Leverkusen started the second half well but Brazilian defender David Luiz opened the scoring for Chelsea with a curling shot from outside the penalty area.

Mata then calmed any injury time nerves for Chelsea when he slotted home a pass from his fellow Spaniard Torres.
