Preview

PSG are 90 minutes away from securing their spot in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Standing in their way is Real Sociedad, with the Spanish outfit looking to overturn the 2-0 deficit. Can the hosts pull this off at the Anoeta Stadium?

La Real were the away side in the first leg, traveling to the Parc des Princes with the sole aim of winning. The Spanish outfit created promising situations away to the French champions but given how cruel the UEFA Champions League can be, Real Sociedad were made to pay for their profligacy.

It came as little surprise to see a team containing Kylian Mbappe exhibit more ruthlessness in front of goal, with the Frenchman scoring against Imanol Alguacil's side. The Basque outfit would go on to concede again, this time against young winger Bradley Bracola, thus leaving the hosts with a hill to overcome.

This is only the second time Real Sociedad have made the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League since the competition's name change from the European Cup. In that previous instance, the Spanish outfit faced a French club and were dumped out in the last 16 at the hands of Lyon.

Oyarzabal and Co. would not want to repeat this but form paints a bleak picture of their odds of overturning the deficit. Sociedad have been nothing short of dreadful in their last nine games, winning only once during the run while losing their last three fixtures in a row.

PSG, meanwhile, simply need to hold onto their 2-0 lead to make it past the round of 16 for the first time in three years. However, making the quarterfinals is not their goal as Kylian Mbappe dreams of leading his team to European glory for the first time ever in what looks to be his final season in Paris.

With the French star having all but agreed to join Real Madrid this summer, 2023-24 will be Kylian's final campaign at the Parc des Princes. This issue has sparked issues for Luis Enrique's side, which surfaced in the nil-nil draw at Monaco on Friday.

The attacker was taken off at half-time in that game and instead of joining his comrades in the dugout, the attacker switched clothes and joined his mother and agent in the stands. He was even seen talking on the phone and laughing and smiling while his team dropped points in the Ligue 1 title race.

Fortunately, Les Parisiens' form has been superb. While PSG are winless in their last two matches, drawing against Rennes and Monaco in Ligue 1, Mbappe and Co. are unbeaten in their last 20 fixtures across all competitions. In fact, their last defeat came in the UEFA Champions League group stage when they lost 2-1 away to AC Milan.

Team news

Real Sociedad: Aritz Elustondo returns from suspension. However, Martin Merquelanz, Alvaro Odriozola, Aihen Munoz, and Carlos Fernandez are all injured while Ander Barrenetxea is a doubt.

PSG: Kylian Mbappe was subbed off in the 0-0 draw with Monaco but as Luis Enrique later explained, this was due to tactical reasons and not fitness. Marquinhos, however, is a doubt for this game while  Milan Skriniar, Layvin Kurzawa, and Presnel Kimpembe are injured. Sergio Rico is recovering from a serious head injury.
