Five-time Copa Libertadores champions Penarol take a giant step towards the group stage of the competition after hitting four past a miserable Caracas on Thursday.
Uruguayan giants Penarol practically assured themselves of a spot in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores after demolishing Caracas 4-0 in the first leg of the qualification play-off in front of 50,000 fans at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo on Thursday.

Penarol, losing finalists of the 2011 competition, completely ripped apart the Venezuelans thanks to goals from Nicolas Freitas, Marcelo Zalayeta, Joao Pedro and Fabian Estoyanoff.

Caracas, who finished the match with ten-men after the late dismissal of Fidel Perez, couldn't find their feet through the length of the encounter, and failed to take advantage of a penalty kick when the match was goalless.

The Uruguayan champions edged their fierce rivals in a tense encounter at the legendary Centenario stadium on Thursday.
Uruguayan champions Nacional advanced to the final of the Copa Antel after edging arch-rivals Penarol 1-0 at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo on Thursday.

The only goal of the match was converted by Nacional defender Jadson Viera, when he headed home a corner-kick delivered by Alvaro Recoba in the 56th minute.

With the win, Nacional avenged their penalty shoot-out defeat to Penarol in the Copa Bimbo last week.

Both teams fielded full-strength sides to confront the highly anticipated superclasico, the biggest game on the Uruguayan soccer calendar.

Penarol win the Copa Bimbo after hitting four past Palestino on Sunday

The 2011 Copa Libertadores finalists won the four-team tournament after a dominant display against the Chileans.
Uruguayan giants Penarol defeated Palestino of Chile 4-2 at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo on Sunday to win the Copa Bimbo.

Penarol won the match courtesy of two goals each from Emiliano Albin and Santiago Silva. While Nicolas Canales and David Llanos scored for the visitors.

After dominating their opponents at the beginning of the match, Penarol finally went ahead in the 28th minute when Albin dribbled past two Palestino defenders before beating goalkeeper Felipe Nunez with a well-placed shot from the edge of the area.

Penarol defeat arch-rivals Nacional on penalties to reach the final of the Copa Bimbo

Los Aurinegros maintained their composure to beat the Uruguayan champions 6-5 on penalties.
Penarol defeated crosstown rivals Nacional 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out in the first 'clasico' of the Uruguayan calendar, to reach the final of the Copa Bimbo where they will meet Palestino of Chile.

Nacional, who are coached by Argentine Marcelo Gallardo, fielded a relatively young side, compared to that of Penarol's, who fielded a full-strength side, including recent signings Fabian Estoyanoff and Luis Aguiar.

In front of 40,000 fans at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo, Nacional dominated their opponents for much of the first half, but they couldn't take advantage of the many goal-scoring opportunities which they created.

An injury-time penalty kick from Alvaro Recoba gave Nacional a dramatic comeback victory over arch-rivals Penarol in the Uruguayan superclasico.
Nacional came from behind to defeat arch-rivals Penarol 2-1 in a dramatic Uruguayan superclasico match played in front of over 60,000 fans at the legendary Centenario stadium in Montevideo on Sunday.

Former Inter Milan playmaker Alvaro Recoba was the hero as it was his penalty kick that gave Nacional the three points in second half injury-time. With the win Nacional climbed above Penarol into second-place of the Apertura after 13 rounds, two points behind league leaders Danubio.

Penarol pushed to the attack immediately from the kick-off, and they almost went ahead when striker Maximiliano Perez brought the ball down in the area, made space for himself and shot on goal, but his effort was brilliantly saved by Nacional goalkeeper Rodrigo Munoz.
