LOS ANGELES, CA – As part of ESPN’s multi-language coverage for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in the U.S., ESPN has introduced a unique, collaborative program that will allow its affiliates to offer select matches from South Africa 2010 in other languages in the United States. This will mark the first time in its FIFA World Cup history, ESPN, in collaboration with affiliates, will offer live matches of the quadrennial tournament in languages other than English. The languages – Arabic, German, Japanese and Korean – can be accessed by a subscriber by making a simple adjustment directly on their set top box, by selecting the appropriate option in their on screen guide.
In November 2009, ESPN announced that ESPN Deportes, the all-sports Spanish-language network, and ESPN3.com will provide Portuguese-language telecasts of 2010 FIFA World Cup, as part of its multi-language rights (except Spanish) in the U.S. for FIFA events through 2014.
"We are always looking for new ways to serve our fans and the World Cup presented the perfect opportunity," said David Preschlack, executive vice president, affiliate sales and marketing, Disney & ESPN Networks Group. "Our team has coordinated a lot of moving pieces to make this happen and we think the end result will help our affiliates serve their increasingly diverse constituents."
Jürgen Klinsmann, the accomplished striker who won the 1990 FIFA World Cup with Germany and returned to coach the national team to a third-place finish in 2006, will join ESPN as a studio analyst for the 2010 FIFA World Cup (June 11 – July 11). Klinsmann will contribute to ESPN and ABC’s studio coverage of the tournament in the United States, appearing on pre-match, halftime and post-match shows from South Africa, including the nightly World Cup Live news and information program and SportsCenter.
Recognized as one of the world’s top strikers during his 16 seasons of top-tier professional soccer in Germany, Italy and England, Klinsmann played in three FIFA World Cups – 1990, 1994 and 1998. He was the first player to score at least three goals in three World Cup events and remains Germany’s second all-time World Cup goal scorer with 11. In 2004, Klinsmann returned to coach the German national team, a position he vacated after a successful 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign in which Germany was the host nation.

ESPN - Umlando – Through My Father’s Eyes
The series captures aspects of the elder Masekela’s life, from memories of his childhood and learning the traditions of his ancestors to offering his impressions of living in South Africa under draconian Apartheid laws. In Umlando, Sal, who serves as ESPN’s host for the X Games, joins his father to explore the 2010 FIFA World Cup host nation in one of American television’s first truly in-depth portrayals of traditional South Africa. The project also represents the first time the two Masekelas are partnering together on a major television project. ESPN Launches 2010 FIFA World Cup “One Game Changes Everything”
