U.S. FIFA World Cup Roster to be Announced on SportsCenter

Wednesday, May 26, live on SportsCenter, U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley will reveal the 23-man roster that will compete in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

All the players selected for the tournament in South Africa will be on the ESPN campus for the announcement that will take place during the 1 p.m. ET hour of the show.
 
ESPN2 will televise live the U.S. teams’ two final matches before the World Cup – against Turkey on Saturday, May 29, at 2 p.m. from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, and playing Australia Saturday, June 5, at 8:30 a.m. from Roodepoort, South Africa.
 
The U.S. Men's National Team will compete in Group C at the FIFA World Cup with England, Slovenia and Algeria.  The U.S. will open its sixth consecutive World Cup tournament against England on June 12 in Rustenburg, and will follow that game with matches against Slovenia on June 18 in Johannesburg and Algeria on June 23 in Tshwane/Pretoria.

ESPN and ESPN Radio Commentator Assignments for 2010 FIFA World Cup

ESPN’s comprehensive coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup (June 11-July 11) from South Africa will include all 64 matches televised live and in high definition on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, as well as extensive coverage on ESPN3.com and ESPN Mobile TV.

ESPN Radio will also broadcast all 64 matches. Today, ESPN FIFA World Cup executive producer Jed Drake announced the ESPN commentator assignments for the first 10 days of the tournament (through each team’s first two matches of pool play). Highlights:
 
Legendary play-by-play commentator Martin Tyler, who has called every FIFA World Cup tournament since 1978, will pair with former Nigerian National Team player Efan Ekoku on the opening match – South Africa vs. Mexico – from Johannesburg Friday, June 11 at 9:30 a.m. ET (ESPN);

Tyler and former United States National Team captain John Harkes will call the England vs. U.S. match from Rustenburg Saturday, June 12 at 2 p.m. (ABC), one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament;
Harkes will serve as match analyst on all U.S. team matches, paired with different play-by-play commentators;

ESPN Offers Tournament to Affiliates in Arabic, German, Japanese and Korean

LOS ANGELES, CA – As part of ESPN’s multi-language coverage for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in the U.S., ESPN has introduced a unique, collaborative program that will allow its affiliates to offer select matches from South Africa 2010 in other languages in the United States. This will mark the first time in its FIFA World Cup history, ESPN, in collaboration with affiliates, will offer live matches of the quadrennial tournament in languages other than English. The languages – Arabic, German, Japanese and Korean – can be accessed by a subscriber by making a simple adjustment directly on their set top box, by selecting the appropriate option in their on screen guide.

In November 2009, ESPN announced that ESPN Deportes, the all-sports Spanish-language network, and ESPN3.com will provide Portuguese-language telecasts of 2010 FIFA World Cup, as part of its multi-language rights (except Spanish) in the U.S. for FIFA events through 2014.

ESPN adds Jürgen Klinsmann to South Africa 2010 Roster

Former South African National Team Player Shaun Bartlett and Former Middlesbrough Midfielder Robbie Mustoe Also Named ESPN Analysts

Jürgen Klinsmann, the accomplished striker who won the 1990 FIFA World Cup with Germany and returned to coach the national team to a third-place finish in 2006, will join ESPN as a studio analyst for the 2010 FIFA World Cup (June 11 – July 11). Klinsmann will contribute to ESPN and ABC’s studio coverage of the tournament in the United States, appearing on pre-match, halftime and post-match shows from South Africa, including the nightly World Cup Live news and information program and SportsCenter.
 
Recognized as one of the world’s top strikers during his 16 seasons of top-tier professional soccer in Germany, Italy and England, Klinsmann played in three FIFA World Cups – 1990, 1994 and 1998.  He was the first player to score at least three goals in three World Cup events and remains Germany’s second all-time World Cup goal scorer with 11.  In 2004, Klinsmann returned to coach the German national team, a position he vacated after a successful 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign in which Germany was the host nation.

ESPN’s unprecedented coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup will include U2 and South Africa’s own Soweto Gospel Choir. These Grammy Award-winning groups will be featured in a series of spots which will be woven into the network’s comprehensive coverage of this month-long event.

2010 FIFA World Cup Schedule on ESPN

ESPN will present comprehensive coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup June 11, through July 11, from 10 stadiums in nine cities across South Africa.  All 64 matches will be aired live and in high definition on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, and extensive coverage on ESPN360.com and ESPN Mobile TV.  In addition, 2010 FIFA World Cup studio programs, including prematch, halftime and postmatch segments, will be presented in high definition.

ESPN will air 44 FIFA World Cup matches from South Africa – the most ever for the network in one tournament.  ESPN2 will feature 10 matches.  ABC will broadcast 10, beginning with the U.S. Men’s National Team’s tournament opener vs. England on Saturday, June 12, at 2 p.m. ET in Rustenburg.  The tournament will conclude on ABC with the title match Sunday, July 11, at 1:30 p.m. ET from the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Coverage will begin Friday, June 11, on ESPN, ESPN360.com and ESPN Mobile TV, with the tournament’s opening match at 9:30 a.m. from the Soccer City in Johannesburg, host country South Africa versus Mexico.
