With the Scudetto firmly out of reach for either side, and both having crashed out of European competitions, the Coppa Italia represents the sole chance of silverware for Napoli and Fiorentina.

Preview: Third-placed Partenopei take on fourth-placed Viola in hope of securing a trophy this season

With an eight point gap between Napoli and Fiorentina, it appears that the last Champions League berth has already been sealed in favour of the Southern Italian club, whilst the Viola have also booked their place in the Europa League group stages. As for this season, neither were able to make much progress in their respective European competitions this year, nor are in contention for the Scudetto, so victory in the Coppa Italia will be the only chance for either side to claim some silverware.

Rafa Benitez's men last won the trophy in 2012 whilst under the guidance present Inter manager Walter Mazzarri, whereas Fiorentina fans last saw their side claim victory in 2001. The two sides have met 14 times previous, with four wins for Napoli, two for Fiorentina, and eight stalemates--so determining which side will come out on top after 90 (or more minutes) won't be easy to predict. Especially since in league play, neither of these two have completed a double over the other, with Napoli winning in Florence 2-1 and Fiorentina returning to the San Paolo later on to defeat them 1-0.

For coach Vincenzo Montella, this will present his first opportunity to claim a trophy with the club that he assumed responsibility for in 2012, whereas Benitez will be hoping to keep up his track record of winning at least trophy at every club that he has managed to date.

In terms of personnel, Montella will have to contend with the suspension of pacey winger Juan Cuadrado, as well as fitness issues of striking duo Mario Gomez and Giuseppe Rossi. Both the German and Italian internationals have been in and out of the squad due to injuries, but while the coach conceded that the former Bayern Munich man will probably not feature, he was still optimistic on Rossi, who had been leading Serie A's scoring charts before his injury.

"Rossi is training, but I don't know many minutes he has in his legs [yet]," the former Roma striker stated in a pre-match press conference.

"[However], Gomez hasn't been training with the rest of the group, so it's highly unlikely he'll feature."

As for Benitez, the Spanish tactician had some encouraging news for Napoli fans, in that key striker Gonzalo Higuain seems to have recovered from his leg injury sustained against Inter. Still, his coach remains cautiously optimistic and hence it remains to see whether the Argentinian international will feature in the clash.

Benitez was keen to underlie how important a trophy would be for his side, who suffered heartbreak in the Champions League when their 12 points was not enough to ensure progression, and they failed to make any amends in the continent's second-tier competition, either. Yet, he also sought to take pressure off his players should they fail to win against an equally hungry Fiorentina side.

"[While] winning a trophy will be very important for our growth, a defeat will not change how we assess our season," he noted while speaking reporters earlier this week.

"[But] I'm sure it will be a great final since both teams play good football."

Certainly, given this, it should hopefully be an entertaining clash for both Napoli and Fiorentina fans as well as for neutral calcio supporters.
