Argentine youngster Erik Lamela scored twice against Fiorentina to send Roma into the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia.
AS Roma will meet Juventus in an intriguing Coppa Italia quarter-final after hammering Fiorentina 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.
After a relatively quiet first half which ended scoreless, Roma put on a dominating second half display to kill off their opponents with three goals that arrived within the space of twenty-two minutes.
Former River Plate midfielder Erik Lamela opened the scoring for Roma in the 53rd minute when he fired the ball through the legs of Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto after good lead-up work from Roma captain Francesco Totti.
The Uruguayan goal-poacher could return to Argentina with defending champions Boca Juniors.
The agent of Santiago Silva, Pablo Betancourt, discarded any possibilities of the Uruguayan striker returning to Velez Sarsfield, opening the door for a future transfer to Argentine Apertura champions Boca Juniors.
"We spoke with Velez, we reunited with them, but they couldn't buy out his contract. Now we can negotiate with other teams," the agent explained to TyC Sports on Friday.
Betancourt stated that if Boca want to purchase the striker first they would have to ask for the collaboration of the AFA so that the regulation would permit the Uruguayan to be eligible to play for three clubs in the space of a year.
Juventus and Fiorentina battle on Sunday in a game that evokes mutual loathing characteristic of a derby.

For many, the most abiding legacy of Roberto Baggio is his missed penalty against Brazil in the 1994 World Cup Final. Stepping up to the spot on that day, Baggio already looked despondent, as if he knew the worst was to come. Up against the onerous expectation of the Italian public and the unnerving Pasadena heat, Baggio lost his nerve. After skying the penalty, he stood, head bowed, with frenzied Brazilian celebrations settling in all around him.
That portrait of vastly differing emotions has managed to make it into most illustrated depictions of Baggio's career. It did not matter that Baggio had single-handedly taken Italy to the Final, rescuing them from the brink of a potentially embarrassing defeat against Nigeria in the round of sixteen, before scoring the winning goals against Spain and Bulgaria in the quarter and semi-finals. What mattered is Baggio had buckled when it mattered most.
Coach Leonardo has interestingly downplayed the importance of Saturday’s AC Milan vs Inter derby whereas everyone around him portrays it as the Scudetto’s decider. Live Soccer TV tackles this topic.

It is true that nothing is over until it is over and that points get counted at the end of the road in football. However, mathematical possibilities don’t always defeat realism. If Inter fall 5 points behind AC Milan on Saturday with a defeat, it won’t mathematically rule out Leonardo’s team as potential title winners since there will then be 7 more matches to go.
However, football fans will expect AC Milan to keep matters in their own hands at the disadvantage of the then-wounded Nerazzurri. So isn’t it normal to view this weekend’s derby as the ultimate title decider?
Adrian Mutu returns to the fold after Fiorentina decide to forgive him.

Fiorentina have pardoned Adrian Mutu, releasing a statement on their official website that says the striker can return to the squad tomorrow.
Mutu had petulantly left the training facilities after hearing that his request for a transfer to Cesena was rejected. Fiorentina froze him out of the squad as a consequence. However, after recriminations and reconciliations, Mutu has returned to Fiorentina, where he could form a fruitful partnership with Alberto Gilardino.
Fiorentina's official website released the following statement:
"ACF Fiorentina conveys that Adrian Mutu, as of tomorrow, Friday 4 February, will be reintegrated with the first team and therefore he will be at the disposal of the coach, Sinisa Mihajlovic."
This is not the first time that the 32-year-old Romanian has had trouble with authority. At Chelsea, Mutu was suspended after he failed a drugs test, and he also was at odds with then coach Jose Mourinho.
Juventus are hoping to lure Fiorentina’s Alberto Gilardino at all cost during the January transfer window. The Turin-based side are willing to offer striker Amauri with €10M to the Viola according to transfer news from Italy.

Ilsussidiario.net claims that Juventus are looking to meet with Fiorentina’s chiefs for the signature of Alberto Gilardino. The Italian forward is believed to be the top man on Juve’s transfer wish list since the player is reportedly keen on leaving the Florence outfit to become a Bianconeri.
Gilardino currently earns €2.3M a year whereas he is set to gain €3M should he join Juventus. The problem in this transfer deal is that the Old Lady’s injured Amauri – who is expected to return to action next month – doesn’t seem ready to quit the Stadio Olimpico di Torino.
The AFC Fiorentina left winger sensational season has not gone unnoticed and teams like Real Madrid, Liverpool or Juventus are after his signature.
Reports have suggested that all three teams have knocked on Fiorentina's door this past week and put in bids for Juan Manuel Vargas. This is no surprise to those of us who have followed Vargas this season and during his career. Since his professional debut for Universatio de Deportes, (Peru), in November 2002, his career has been a model progression of step by step.
After imposing and consistent performances for ´La Crema' for two and a half years he left Peru to play in Argentina for Club Atletico Colon. His adaptation did not take long and he continued to develop his abilities in the Argentinean League. Just when the 2006 Apertura season was about to commence Europe came calling, specifically Portsmouth and Vargas decided to come and grow as a footballer. However, a deal was not agreed and finally Vargas ended up signing for Serie A club Calcio Catania in 2006 for around $3.3m.
Next week, Liverpool face a tough trip in Italy as they’ll have to face Seria A’s Fiorentina in Match-day 2 of the UEFA Champions League.
Rafael Benitez’s red militaries are favorites to win the battle, but nothing should be taken away from La Viola.
Certainly, the absence of Alberto Gilardino in Fiorentina’s squad on Tuesday will lower Liverpool’s anxiety at the back.
The Italian striker needs to serve a two-match ban following a red card which he received against Olympique Lyonnais.
Gilardino was charged by UEFA with violent conduct for elbowing Lyon’s Jeremy Toulalan a fortnight...
