An exciting Premier League encounter will see Manchester City face Everton at the Goodison Park on Sunday, the 3rd of May.

Preview: Everton hoping to hamper City’s title ambitions

A victory for Everton on Saturday will make things easier for Liverpool as they target their first Premier League title and even though the Toffees would be unwilling to do their Merseyside rivals any favors, Roberto Martinez has maintained that his side will be professional in their approach and continue to chase their ambitions.

Everton were expected to clinch a place in the top four after a 3-0 victory over Arsenal last month but a few hurdles down the road have once again pushed them to fifth place. A 3-2 defeat against Crystal Palace was followed by a 2-0 loss at the hands of Southampton which saw Everton defenders twice put the ball in their own net.

Sandwiched between these two defeats was a victory against Manchester United and despite all their hard work the Toffees find themselves trailing Arsenal by four points and with just two games remaining in the current Barclays Premier League campaign only a miracle will guarantee them participation in the Champions League next season.

But Everton will continue to fight to achieve their season goals and having performed admirably against the top sides this season, Martinez’s men will be in a buoyant mood ahead of the match against City. Everton have beaten Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United at the Goodison Park this season and have only once lost to Man City at home since 1992.

The Citizens on the other hand have been largely inconsistent this season but might not be able to afford another blip. Chelsea’s win over Liverpool last weekend has put City in the driving seat and Pellegrini’s men will claim the league crown should they successfully win their remaining matches.
The Chilean tactician has recognized that Man City have their destiny in their own hands and has encouraged his players to maintain their focus till the end of the season.

“The good thing is that the destiny is in our own hands at the moment. This league will be decided by a narrow margin, maybe one point, maybe even goal difference. We have to remain focused in ourselves, and in every single match," he said.

“We are not thinking about goal difference, we are just thinking about how to beat Everton next week. The most important thing is just to concentrate our minds on the next game. If we win our three games, maybe and Liverpool win their two, then maybe the goal difference will be important.

“But before that, we've got to concentrate on the games ahead of us. We must win the three games, I've said all year that all the big teams must feel pressure to win the title. Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United: all the big teams feel the pressure to win the title. Now we'll continue with the same pressure, but it's positive pressure.''

Having recorded a victory in both of their last two matches, the Citizens will be in a buoyant mood and will be hoping to keep the momentum going. They scored a comfortable 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last time out as Yaya Toure made his return to the starting lineup. The Ivory Coast international provided the assist for the first goal scored by Edin Dzeko and got himself on the score sheet just before half time.

With matches against Aston Villa and West Ham to follow after their trip to Goodison Park the match against Everton could verily decide if the Citizens will be crowned English champions by the end of the season.

The reverse fixture played back in October ended in Man City’s favor as the Citizens scored a 3-1 victory over Everton. But history goes against Manchester City who have not done the double over their counterparts since the 1980/1981 season. The Toffees have been very impressive at their own turf this season and have won all of their last six matches at the Goodison Park.

Gareth Barry on loan at Everton will be ineligible to play against his parent club but Everton captain Phil Jagielka is expected to make his return from a hamstring injury and could be accompanied by Sylvain Distin at the heart of the defense after the Frenchman recovered from injury having missed the 2-0 defeat against Southampton last time out.

David Silva could make his return to the squad after recovering from an ankle injury but both Jesus Navas (ankle) and Matija Nastasic (knee) are unlikely to play any part.
