With only four teams remaining in the competition now, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea will now battle it out for a place in the final. The two teams face each other in the first leg at Vicente Calderón on Tuesday, the 22nd of April.

Preview: Inform Atletico Madrid face stuttering Chelsea

The two teams have had contrasting forms as of late, whereas Atletico have gone on a fine run which has seen them extend their win streak to eight games in La Liga, Chelsea have cheaply lost points in the Premier League and are now outside contenders for the title.

Their last outing against Sunderland brought an end to Jose Mourinho’s record at Stamford Bridge. Prior to the match the Portuguese tactician had been unbeaten at Chelsea’s home in the 77 matches in which he had represented the Blues as manager. His streak was brought to an end from the most unlikely of sources as rock bottom Sunderland subjected the London side to a 2-1 defeat.

After his heroics against Man City, Connor Wickham once again produced the goods for his side after leveling the scores, but it was Fabio Borini who stole the show as the former Chelsea man scored the winner for his side from the penalty spot.

As a result of their defeat Chelsea are now five points behind leaders Liverpool and will be less confident of their chances of a domestic trophy this season. However the Blues are still in contention of winning a third successive European title having won the Europa Cup last season and the Champions League the season prior to that.

Above all Chelsea have at helm one of the finest managers in Europe and his experience will be vital if Chelsea are to be crowned the champions of Europe this time around. Wednesday’s meeting between the two clubs will be the eighth time Mourinho will take charge of a Champions League semi-final thereby surpassing Sir Alex Ferguson’s record. Furthermore the Portuguese has won the coveted crown twice during his managerial career, once with Porto in 2004 and later with Inter Milan in 2010.

However Chelsea will have to be at their supreme best against an Atletico side which has so far been the team to beat in Europe. Los Rojiblancos are currently the only unbeaten side in the competition and have conceded just five goals in the ten matches they have played in Europe this season. Diego Simeone’s men are currently top of La Liga and much of this is down to their terrific home form. Atleti are unbeaten at the Vicente Calderón this season having won 15 of the 18 matches they have played at home in La Liga. The goal return has been commendable too, with Los Colchoneros managing to score 48 times in 18 home games and have conceded just nine.

Their 2-0 victory over Elche last time out was Atletico’s eighth consecutive in the competition and as things currently stand, the Spanish league is set to witness a La Liga winner other than Barcelona and Real Madrid for the first time since Valencia won the league back in the 2003-04 season.

Thibaut Courtois’ participation in the match had caused much controversy prior to the game, but the Belgian international is set to face his parent club in what he has described as a ‘special’ meeting.

"For me, the fact that we’ve drawn Chelsea, like we did in the European Super Cup, is special because even though I'm at Atleti, Chelsea are my club too," Courtois said.

"It's better not to think about it too much though and play like I always do, because if I start thinking, 'Oh, I'd better be careful,' then I'll end up playing poorly.

Even though the youngster has been representing Atletico for three seasons now, he reiterated his admiration for his parent club but claimed that his hunger for a trophy will keep him an Atletico Madrid for the two matches.

"I want to win trophies here and I'll be an Atleti supporter for these two games, but at all other times I'm a Chelsea fan too. I hope they win the Premier League, just not these two [Champions League] matches. I really hope we can reach the final as we're so close. [Chelsea] are the favorites, but Barca were too."

The 21 year old also had words of praise for his manager Diego Simeone who he believes his behind the success Atleti have achieved this season.

"So much of this success is down to Simeone because he's the man who’s guided us this far," the 21-year-old said. "From the first time he spoke to us when he was appointed, he told us he had a very clear idea about how he wanted things to be done and how he wanted us to play.”

Last time the two sides met was highlighted by a stellar display from Radamel Falcao who struck a wonderful hat-trick to give Atletico a 4-1 win over the Blues in the UEFA Super Cup. However the Colombian no longer represents Los Indios after sealing a move to French club AS Moncao in the summer, however Atletico have in their ranks one of the most in form strikers in Diego Costa and Chelsea defenders will have to keep him at bay if they are to get anything out of the match.

Chelsea will be without a number of players ahead of their trip to Madrid, with defender Branislav Ivanovic suspended for the game whereas playmaker Eden Hazard is major doubt as well. Samuel Eto'o has been ruled out due to a knee injury, this implies that Fernando Torres is in contention to line up against his former club.
