Saturday is usually the day the ugly salad bowl is handed over to the champion-elect. What is unusual is a title deciding game could be held on a Saturday in the middle of March. Bayern has dominated the Bundesliga; they are 25 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund. In order for the Bavarians to officially clinch the title, they need other results to go their way and they need to win their match. In other words, Borussia Dortmund and Schalke must drop points. Jürgen Klopp’s side might end up doing exactly that against Hannover but Schalke is less likely to do so against Braunschweig.

Mainz, however, is no pushover. They have a past history of troubling Bayern at the most unexpected times. Aside from that, their position in the table suggests they should be taken seriously; Thomas Tuchel’s side occupies fifth spot. Mainz’s modest team has really forced some of the rich sides in the league such as Hamburg to take another look at themselves. Considering their meager resources, Mainz should be fighting for relegation, not European football. This is why Tuchel is often regarded as almost another “Klopp”.

In terms of injuries, both teams look quite healthy. For Bayern, Holger Badstuber is continuing his separate program in order to finally return to professional football following a longer than expected spell on the sidelines. Thiago Alcantara is out as well. For Mainz, Julian Baumgartlinger is out as is former Düsseldorf sensation, Dani Schahin.

The previous meeting between these two sides was a very interesting one. Mainz went up a goal and Bayern largely struggled to produce anything against their rivals. In the second half, they finally managed to wake up. Arjen Robben cancelled out Shawn Parker’s equalizer. Within two minutes of the equalizer, Thomas Müller added a second. Mario Mandzukic and Müller again struck as the match ended 4-1.
