Serie A strugglers Udinese and AC Milan will clash at Stadio Friuli on Saturday, the 8th of March in a Serie A encounter.

Preview: Both teams looking to respond after defeats

Both sides finished in the top five last season but have been struggling to replicate their form this time around. Milan are positioned 10th in the league table and have lost thrice in their last five outings in all competitions. A Champions League defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid was followed by a 2-0 win over Sampdoria. But Milan failed to build upon their victory as Juventus subjected them to a 2-0 loss in the subsequent match.

Udinese on the other hand are having a nightmare of a season. From being a side which challenged for the Champions League spot, Udinese are now a team which could potentially be relegated by the end of the season with just seven points separating them and 18th placed Livorno.

The Bianconeri   suffered a 3-0 demoralising defeat at the hands of Cagliari last time out and will be hoping to respond in their match against Milan. Udinese are in fact winless in their last four matches in all competitions and last time they recorded a win was back in February when Francesco Guidolin’s men recorded a 3-0 win over Chievo.

AC Milan on the other hand have been under intense media scrutiny after rumours surfaced that the club was up for sale. However the club has refuted such claims through an official statement. It is important that Milan now focus at on pitch matters and respond by picking up all three points against an Udinese side which is not in the best of forms.

A win on Saturday will further ensure that Milan are in a buoyant mood when they face Atletico Madrid in a Champions League clash on Tuesday, a match in which they must score more than once if they are to advance to the next round of the tournament in normal time.

Seedorf and Milan will take confidence from the fact that despite losing out to leaders Juventus in their last outing, the players put a dominant performance in the first half and were rather unlucky to lose.

Mario Balotelli is expected to return to the side after being sidelined with a shoulder injury. The talented Italian international has established himself as one of the key figures in Milan’s line-up and is capable of resurrecting their season. Jose Mourinho granted support to the former Man City striker praising his abilities and claiming that there was a lot more to come from the 23 year old.

"I always thought that was great fun and I have good memories of that,” said Mourinho speaking of his time at Inter Milan where he coached Balotelli.

“Obviously with a kid like him, maybe now he is a bit different but at that time you have your ups and downs and we had our ups and downs but at the end of the day I enjoyed it; I think he enjoyed too.”

“He learned a few things – or not – but he enjoyed too and he won: he was a Champions League winner at 18-years-old."

“He is a very young player, he’s very young. He started so young that maybe people now maybe think Balotelli is 27 or 28 but he’s not 27 or 28.”

“He was playing in the Champions League when he was 17, 18 and he come to City when he was 19, 20. He’s a kid, he’s still a very young kid.

“I think the best years of a playing career are between 27 and 31 - so he’s not there, but hopefully he goes in the right direction.”

Cristian Zapatais is also available for selection against his former team after the Colombian recovered from a hamstring injury that has kept him out since January. Midfielder Andrea Poli on the other hand is a doubt for the tie after suffering a head injury in the match against Juventus.

Udinese will be without defender Danilo who will serve a one match suspension after receiving his fourth yellow card of the season in the match against Cagliari.

Last time the two sides met Udinese recorded a 2-1 win over the San Siro side in the Coppa Italia, another such result will bode well for Francesco Guidolin’s side as it will allow them to keep a distance from the relegation zone.
