Chelsea will host Tottenham in a London Derby at the Stamford Bridge on Saturday, the 8th of March 2014.

Preview: Spurs hoping to end 24 year winless streak at Stamford Bridge

Last time Spurs emerged victorious in an away encounter against Chelsea was back in 1990 when a late goal from Gary Lineker earned the North London side all three points against the Blues.

Tottenham have since then failed to get the better of their London counterparts and Tim Sherwood will become the latest manager to try to bring an end to this disruptive streak. However Jose Mourinho’s home record has been impeccable and it will only take a sublime performance from Sherwood’s men to get anything out of the match.

Chelsea are currently unbeaten in the 74 Premier League home matches they have played under Jose Mourinho and are currently on a fine run of form having not lost since their 3-2 defeat at the hands of Stoke back in December.

The Blues will be hoping to extend their lead at the top to seven points with both Arsenal and Man City set to feature in the FA Cup this weekend and second placed Liverpool not playing till next Sunday. Chelsea have shown incredible resilience in their recent matches and it will definitely be a tough task for Tottenham forwards to get the better of Chelsea’s defence.

However Tottenham fans will be encouraged by Roberto Soldado’s goal in their last Premier League outing. The Spaniard arrived to North London for a hefty 26 million pounds and was renowned for his goal scoring abilities. However the former Valencia man has failed to show his true colours so far and his winner against Cardiff was only his first of the year.

The 28 year also admitted that he might have opted to quit the team, but his experience has allowed him to be more mature in his approach.

"If all this had happened to me when I was 22, I would have probably returned home after a month," he admitted.

"But I believe it is a positive experience for me, my family and for the education of my children.”

"I am the only one responsible for my poor form, but I will get better. We have a great team and I am convinced we can have a good season."

The Spaniard also expressed his gratitude towards the players and the fans of the club who the striker claimed always had his back.

"It was a much-needed goal for me and especially for my team-mates and the fans," he added.

"Despite all the time I have gone without scoring a goal, the support they have given me has been incredible.”

Spurs are expected to be in a buoyant mood ahead of the tie and will be confident of finally getting a win at the Stamford Bridge. The North London side dramatically clinched a place in the last 16 of the Europa League after beating Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 3-1 in the second leg. Furthermore their victory against Cardiff last time out has drawn them closer to the top four spot and the lilywhites trail fourth placed Man City by just four points. And with the Citizens not scheduled to play a League match this weekend owing to their FA Cup commitments, Spurs can potentially narrow the difference to just one point.

Emmanuel Adebayor’s performances will be vital to Tottenham’s chances. The Togolese striker has scored seven times in his last six away league appearances and will be confident of improving his tally on Saturday. The former Arsenal man also enjoys a fine record against the Blues having scored thrice against Chelsea in three of his last four top flight starts against the London side.

Last time the two sides met back in September at the White Hart Lane the match ended in a 1-1 draw when Gylfi Sigurdsson opened the scoring for Spurs but his goal was cancelled out by John Terry, this was before Fernando Torres was given his marching orders.

The Iceland international was also on target for Tottenham last time the two sides met at Stamford Bridge when the match ended in a 2-2 draw, the other goal for Tottenham was scored by Emmanuel Adebayor.

Tim Sherwood has several injury concerns heading into the match with all of Danny Rose (knee), Etienne Capoue (ankle) and Kyle Walker (thigh) major doubts for the trip to Stamford Bridge. Younes Kaboul is also a doubt for the match but is expected to be fit for Saturday’s tie.

Chelsea’s talismanic winger Eden Hazard picked up a knock while on international duty but is confident of being fit for Saturday’s encounter.
