Cardiff City will be hoping to bring an end to their woeful form when they face Tottenham Hotspur at the White Hart Lane on Sunday, the 2nd of March.

Preview: Spurs looking to build on European triumph

The North London side put forth an astonishing display of character as they raced to a 3-1 win over Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the second leg of the Europa League last 32 tie.

After winning the first leg 1-0 the Ukrainian side increased their lead on aggregate to 2-0 after Roman Zozulya put the visitors 2-0 up on aggregate but three goals within 13 minutes allowed Tottenham to take the lead and a seal a place in the last 16 of the competition.

In a post match interview head coach Tim Sherwood praised his side for a valiant performance and encouraged his players to build upon it.

"It's a big platform for us, we started very well. I can only talk since I've been here but it's been brilliant in thePremier League," he said.

"We've struggled in cup competitions but on the back of a poor result at Norwich we should really be bouncing intothat game against Cardiff on Sunday.”

"That's what we're looking for, a platform, and we believed we could win this game today and turn the tie around.”

The Englishman also praised his side’s character for mounting a sensational comeback after going down 2-0 and alluded to it as being a positive learning experience for his players.

"It is a good platform, it is a good learning curve and it is something we can point to in the future if we do go behind, we have to give everything," he said.

"This club won't accept anything less than that. We have to give everything even if we're out of the game.”

However Tottenham have not played particularly well in the matches which followed their Europa League fixtures this season. Of the nine league matches they have played immediately after a European encounter this season, Spurs have lost five and have managed to notch just a paltry  10 points from a possible 27. One of the five defeats also included a 5-0 battering at the hands of Liverpool at home which resulted in former manager Andre Villas-Boas relieved of his duties.

However after taking over from the Portuguese, Tim Sherwood has brought some changes which have done the club good. Since the former Tottenham midfielder took over Spurs have lost just twice in 11 league matches. One of the alterations he made in the side was restoring Emmanuel Adebayor as the man to lead the line for Spurs a decision which has reaped benefits for the club.

His brace in the Europa League last time out took the Togo international’s tally for the season to 10 goals for the season. Furthermore the former Arsenal man has been exceptional under Tim Sherwood’s management and has scored a league goal every 125 minutes. He has bagged five goals in the last four matches and will definitely be the biggest threat to a Cardiff defence which has been very fragile recently.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s debut season as a manager in the Premier League has been nothing short of abysmal. Under the former Man United forward the Bluebirds have notched just four points from seven Premier League games and their antics have resulted in them slipping down to the 19th spot.

However with Sunderland not involved in the Premier League this weekend owing to their participation in the Capital One Cup Final, Cardiff can move one place up if they manage to defeat Tottenham.

Tottenham on the other hand will be cautious of a defeat as they look to close down the six point gap between themselves and Liverpool as Spurs aim for a Champions League spot.

Jermain Defoe bid farewell to the North London club after formally joining MLS side Toronto FC this week. Whereas first choice full backs Danny Rose (knee) and Kyle Walker (thigh) are doubts for the match whereas Etienne Capoue (ankle) is also expected to miss the home fixture against the Welsh side.

Cardiff on the other hand will welcome Gary Medel and Jordon Mutch both of whom have recovered from their respective injuries, Craig Bellamy on the other hand will be available for selection after serving a three match suspension.
