Despite suffering a 5-1 demolition against Manchester City on home soil in midweek, Tottenham Hotspur’s mission of qualifying for the Champions League is still on course.

Hull City will host Spurs on February 1, 2014.Preview: Spurs and the Tigers both want to get back on track

Was Andre Villas-Boas the main problem at White Hart Lane? Even if Tim Sherwood’s appointment was warmly welcomed by many Spurs fans, the 100M Euros new-look team’s inconsistent results seem to explain that much more needs to be done to rectify things.

The post-AVB era began with instant success as Tottenham bounced back from a 5-0 humiliation in the hands of Liverpool with a 3-2 win over Southampton. They picked a point in the following game at home to West Bromwich Albion and got full points against Stoke City, Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Swansea City.

In midweek, however, the Spurs machine crashed against Manuel Pellegrini’s merciless Citizens. The defeat kept Sherwood’s side outside the Champions League zone. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was quick to rally his team mates. He was quoted as saying by ESPN FC:

“We have to be positive. When you lose 5-1 at home, it’s never easy to digest, but this is football.

“We are fifth, three points behind Liverpool and anything can happen between now and the end of the season. We have to have a good reaction against Hull City.”

The Tigers are 13th in the table, four points safe from the bottom three. They will be seeking revenge after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat at White Hart Lane back in October 2013. In 2014, Hull have lost all of their Premier League games. They still haven’t found the net after poaching a spectacular 6-0 victory against Fulham to end the previous year all smiles.

Will the Tigers end their four-game barren run and toy with Tottenham Hotspur’s confidence?
