Manchester City has been making waves in the Premier League recently; they have been breathing down Arsenal’s neck from their second spot. Can their league form translate into a Cup victory?

Preview: Can Manuel Pellegrini lead City to the FA Cup?

City’s Chilean coach, Manuel Pellegrini already ruled out Martin Demichelis, Sergio Aguero, Jack Rodwell, Stevan Jovetic and Micah Richards. Considering the busy Christmas and New Year schedule of the Premier League, the manager might consider making some changes such as bringing on Javi Garcia and James Milner. David Silva could start after missing the midweek Premier League clash against Swansea due to suspension.

Todd Kane, David Dunne and DJ Campbell are doubtful for Blackburn. Gary Bowyer will be happy to welcome back Jason Lowe after suspension. His side signed two players this week to permanent long term contracts. Both the players had initially been brought temporarily to the club. The loan stints of Rudy Gestede from Cardiff and Tom Cairney from Hull City proved to be successful enough for them to be made permanent.

Blackburn’s recent form in the Championship has been quite good. Their only recent loss came to Birmingham City, 2-3. Other than that, they beat Leeds United, Yeovil and Millwall, drawing only against Sheffield Wednesday.

Blackburn currently sits tenth in the Championship. They sit a full twelve points behind third placed QPR, having collected 34 points from 24 matches. Promotion does not seem to be on the agenda currently. Therefore, a good Cup run would definitely satisfy the fans. The team they are up against however has done well recently in domestic Cup competitions.

City has already qualified for the semifinals of the Capital One Cup. Pellegrini spoke of the club’s ambitions to Sky Sports:

"I said from the beginning of the season if we are going to play in every competition we must play with exactly the same importance.

The FA Cup is a very traditional competition here in England and in every country of Europe the cup is always an important competition.

Some players will have the chance to play now in the FA Cup. As I said with the Capital One, both cups finish at Wembley and to finish at Wembley with a final is important for every team.”

The previous meeting between these two sides took place in early 2012 in the Premier League and ended in City’s favor, 3-0, with Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko grabbing the goals.
