Preview: Austria will be a tough test, after a scoreless draw in Scotland
Austria came up just short in Group C, as they finished three points behind Sweden. With 17 points from 10 matches, the Austrians will not have been too upset, considering they had Germany, Sweden and even the Republic of Ireland in their group.
Having to turn the page and look at their future beyond next year's World Cup, Austria has failed to qualify for a World Cup since 1998. They will now need to put all their focus on the upcoming European Championship in 2016, which will be held in France.
Despite their recent heart-break, Dynamo Kiev's Aleksandar Dragovic believes that the Austrian side has the needed work ethic to turn things around.
"The team is fully motivated," he told reporters ahead of their match against the USA. "The team boss knows exactly what he wants to see from us. Everyone gives 100 per cent on the pitch."
Jurgen Klinsmann will be looking for the same effort from his players, who prior to their draw with Scotland, were coming off 15 victories in 16 matches. Their only let down was a 3-1 defeat against Costa Rica.
Having already qualified for the World Cup, making that their seventh consecutive appearance, the German manager will have a chance to test out some new options, ideas and players. Building on their great defensive record will be a perfect start.
"Defensively, you always want to build on good results, good performances and a clean-sheet," Tim Howard told reporters after their scoreless draw against Scotland on Friday. "We're going to Austria, another tough game away from home. If we can get the victory and end on a high, everybody's going to feel really good."
The American fans will be hopeful that the match on Tuesday will be somewhat more entertaining than their visit to Hampden Park on Friday.
