Who are the 2013-14 Portuguese Liga season promoted teams?

The Portuguese League will welcome back Belenenses for the 2013/14 campaign, after they were relegated at the end of the 2009/10 campaign. Having spent a few years in the second division, the Lisbon-based side took the top spot in the Segunda Divisão, and guaranteed promotion, along with second placed Arouca.

For Arouca, their promotion is historic, considering this will be their first participation in the Portuguese top flight, although the club has been in existence since 1951. Arouca’s road has been full of tales – from taking part in the fifth division back in 2000, to taking on their biggest challenge, 13 years later.

Two teams that will not be taking part in this season’s Liga Zon Sagres will be Moreirense and Beira-Mar. Both clubs came up short, but only missed out on the relegation free zone by one and two points.

-    Demoted: Moreirense, Beira-Mar

-    Promoted: Belenenses, Arouca

Who will play in the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League?

The 2012/13 Portuguese League campaign took a number of twists and turns throughout the season, but some late heroics in the second to last match will leave this one down in the record books.

Benfica seemed destined to take the top spot in the Portuguese League, with three matches remaining, two of them being played at home, and one away to Porto. A slender lead had Benfica fans hopeful that the squad could manage at least a draw at the Dragão, but a 92nd minute goal from Kelvim reignited Porto’s flame, which then saw them defeat Paços de Ferreira in the final match to win the Primeira Liga title.

With Benfica and Porto being regulars in the Champions League, a newcomer from Portugal will be Paços de Ferreira, who earned themselves a spot in the Play-off Round. The Castores had never finished higher than the sixth spot in the Portuguese top flight, but now Porto manager Paulo Fonseca led them to a historic finish last season.

1.    Porto – 78 points

2.    Benfica – 77 points

3.    Paços de Ferreira – 54 points

Who will play in the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League?

The Europa League candidates out of the Portuguese League will have a surprise in Estoril de Praia. Marco Silva’s squad was one of the most sensational clubs last season, along with Paços de Ferreira, earning them a fifth place finish.

Besides Estoril will be Braga and Vitoria de Guimarães – two clubs from the same region in Portugal. Braga’s presence in the Europa League does not come as a surprise, having taken part in the Europa League Final a few years ago in Dublin, only to fall to a Porto side who was managed by Andre Villas-Boas at the time.

Vitoria de Guimarães can be considered the shocking team in this group of three considering they finished ninth in the Portuguese League. Fortunately for them, their shocking victory over Benfica in the Taça de Portugal Final earned them a presence in the Europa League group stages.

Who were last season’s domestic cup winners?

Between the three Portuguese domestic competitions, there were three different champions, which is a positive thing for the league.

-    Portuguese League champions: FC Porto – from Porto, Portugal

-    Taça de Portugal champions (Portuguese Cup): Vitoria de Guimarães – from Guimarães, Portugal.

-    Taça da Liga champions (League Cup): Braga – from Braga, Portugal.

What are the biggest managerial changes?

To the surprise of many, the Portuguese League will continue to be made up of mostly Portuguese managers, with the exception of Mitchell van der Gaag, who manages newly promoted Belenenses.
One major change is Paulo Fonseca’s move from Paços de Ferreira to Porto. It should be interesting to see how Fonseca will cope with the pressure, given the fact that he has never managed a top team, but from a tactical approach, he could bring a lot to the table for the Portuguese Champions.

Leonardo Jardim’s return to the Portuguese League after having spent some time with Olympiakos is also something to watch. The former Nacional manager comes in with a solid resume, but when you consider the internal issues Sporting has been facing over the last few years, the 38-year-old manager could really have his work cut out for him.

-    Academica: Pedro Emanuel departed the Estudantes at the end of the season, making way for another former Portuguese international. Sergio Conceição was appointed their new manager, after spending some time with Olhanense last season.

-    Arouca: Vitor Oliveira led Arouca to promotion, but decided to step down for personal reasons, opting to not manage in the Portuguese top flight. With his departure, former Academica manager Pedro Emanuel will be in charge of the club in their first adventure in the Primeira Divisão.

-    Braga: Jose Peseiro was not a fan favourite last season, leading him to mututally terminate his contract with the club at the end of the season. Former Sporting manager, Jesualdo Ferreira will step in, having already spent some time with the Arsenalistas between 2003 and 2006.

-    Gil Vicente: Paulo Alves left the club after a three-year stint, which saw them claim the Second Division title. In to replace him will be João de Deus, who managed Oliveirense to an eight place finish in the second division.

-    Olhanense: Manuel Cajuda was brought in to be the saviour for Olhanense, but having finish one point from the relegation zone, his time with the club came to an end. Former Portuguese international Abel Xavier will be the club's new manager, making this his first managerial job.

-    Paços de Ferreira: Paulo Fonseca led the club to a Champions League birth, but with Porto knocking at his door, the Portuguese manager had no choice but to make the move. Costinha will come in to replace him, after leading Beira-Mar to relegation last season.

-    Porto: Vitor Pereira left at the end of May for Al-Ahli of Saudi Arabia, deciding to not sign an extension with Porto. Paulo Fonseca was announced as his replacement on June 10, having signed a two year deal with the club.

-    Sporting: Jesualdo Ferreira looked like he had the club heading in the right direction, but having failed to qualify for European Football, new president Bruno de Carvalho opted to look elsewhere for the 2013/14 campaign. Leonardo Jardim will now have the job of trying to get Sporting back into the top spots in the Portuguese League, for the next two seasons.
