The Gold Cup starts this weekend and the USMNT will warm up for this huge event with a friendly match at home to Guatemala on Friday, July 5, 2013.

Fans in San Diego will be able to attend a free public traning session ahead of the USA vs Guatemala friendly match on July 5. Preview: Americans eyeing first win in San Diego

Crucial wins in the World Cup qualifiers last month have done a lot of good to the Americans. The clash against Guatemala should give Jurgen Klinsmann a good view of what to expect from his squad come July 9 when they will open their CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign against Belize.

“This is a very important opportunity for us to get in a good game before the start of the Gold Cup,” the U.S. Men’s National Team manager told the press when the US Soccer Federation announced the fixture weeks ago.

“It is our goal to win the tournament, and the chance to play Guatemala will be good preparation for our group. We are thrilled to get back to San Diego which has such an outstanding soccer tradition,” the ex-Germany boss concluded.

The last time the Stars and Stripes played in San Diego was in 2006. They are yet to win in this city with a 0-5-2 record. There is probably no better time for the team to break its Sand Diego hoodoo than on July 5. In a total of 12 attempts on American soil, Guatemala have never been able to defeat the United States.

Ahead of the game, the USMNT will go through a public training session at the Qualcomm Stadium. Admission is free for fans who wish to witness the athletes live from 16:30 PT / 19:30 PT on Thursday, July 4, 2013.
