With his contract set to expire in 2014, France international, Bacary Sagna could be set to leave Arsenal during the summer and poor form this season will further advocate a move away from the Emirates.
It was quite a feat when Arsene Wenger managed to convince Bacary Sagna into signing for the Gunners back in July 2007 from AJ Auxerre, for a modest 11 million euros. The product of AJA’s youth academy had already been touted for a bright future ahead of him whilst playing for Auxerre. And when he arrived in England as a relatively unknown quantity, he soon became one of the best full-backs in the league.

Twice chosen in the PFA Team of the year by his fellow professionals during his time at the Emirates, it is quite safe to say that in a team that struggles with consistency, Sagna was one of the most reliable players.

However, two broken legs in a space of one year have restricted the Frenchman’s performances and it is unlikely to see the player perform the way he used to. Although there have been talks of a new deal, it is quite unlikely to see Wenger offer his fellow countryman a long-term deal owing to his growing age.

Sagna has not been entirely bad this season, but he is far from the consistent performer Arsenal fans knew. Great games against Sunderland and Fulham were hampered by abysmal outings against Newcastle United and Southampton. When on song, Sagna is a brilliant and tenacious defender who loves going for tackles and getting forward to help the offense.

Throughout this season, Sagna was at blame for many goals that the Gunners conceded with the most recent one coming during the game against Manchester United. Sagna foolishly gave away possession and then brought down Robin Van Persie to concede a silly penalty. The game ended all square and the Gunners missed a vital opportunity to gain advantage in the top four race.

Knowing the shrewd tactician he is, it is very unlikely to see Wenger offer a player in his 30s, a long-term contract. Moreover, with the rise of young Carl Jenkinson, it is very likely to see the Englishman given more chances from next season. Though he has a lot to learn, Jenkinson has shown maturity and flashes of brilliance which signals to a bright future ahead of him.

And if he does not turn out the way Wenger expects him to, there are a lot of options in the market, including young Mathew Lowton of Aston Villa who has been linked with a move to Emirates in recent days.
Regardless of how good and how consistent he was during most part of his Arsenal career, it is clear for all to see that Sagna is on the wane and it is time for him to move on and a younger right-back to take his place.

With the summer transfer window approaching, it is very likely to see clubs approach the player. AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain have already expressed their interest in the French international and Arsenal are likely to bid farewell to their French star if a decent offer is put on the table.

Arsenal are destined to lose a player who has definitely been one of the best full-backs in the league in the last few years. If he leaves in the upcoming summer transfer window it is imperative that Arsenal replace him with a quality full back.
