You can love him or loathe him, but there is no denying that Luis Suarez is one of the most talented forwards in the league right now. He has been a mile above the rest of his teammates this season, with Liverpool having minimal chances of qualifying for the Champions League, the forward could be set for an exit this summer.
Luis Suarez has recently signed a long term contract with Liverpool, pushing away any potential bidders. Even though Suarez had a contract which would not end till the next four years, the Liverpool hierarchy were quick to recognise the fact that the Uruguayan would be instrumental to the growth of the club. Suarez was thus handed a pay rise as well as a contract extension, for his commendable 18 months in the English Premier League.

Suarez has repeatedly distanced himself from claims that he is looking forward to leaving the club in the near future, in one of his interviews when questioned as to whether he will leave, if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League he reiterated:

“But I want to say now that, if you want to know what will happen to me if we don’t qualify for the Champions League, then I will say this: I have a contract with Liverpool and I am very happy here. I will stay.”

This is a true intent of the Uruguayans’ loyalty towards the Reds, he has not just been vocal in his intent however, his displays on the pitch have also reflected the fact that he is completely focused on continuing his football with Liverpool. The Liverpool man has scored 18 goals in the league so far, just one behind Robin Van Persie who tops the scoring charts. In addition to this, he has also provided four assists to his teammates this season and on average provides three key passes per game, more than both Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla and Chelsea’s Juan Mata.

However a player of the calibre of Luis Suarez, certainly deserves to play in the most prestigious European tournament and Liverpool are unlikely to provide him with the opportunity consistently. He is surrounded predominantly by very mediocre players, with Gerrard and Agger probably the only two players of the same level. His teammates are either overly priced English players, the rest are highly inconsistent performers. On Thursday night we witnessed a similar showing, when a Jamie Carragher error gifted the ball to Hulk who scored Zenit’s first goal making it 3-0 on aggregate. A comeback seemed impossible, but a spirited Luis Suarez brought Liverpool back into the game by scoring a brace, Allen added a third goal but Liverpool eventually bowed out of the Europa League losing on away goals.

What might further induce his move away from Anfield is the fact, that Liverpool are a club which refuse to improve. Liverpool are not the same club which could consistently finish in the top four, neither do they have world class players they once had, nor can they attract players in the world class mould anymore. Liverpool are gradually adjusting to mediocrity and Suarez can be the man who can guide them back to greatness. However it will be impossible for him to do it all alone and the lack of support given to him by his teammates on a consistent basis, might surely instigate a move away to a bigger club.

However there are certain factors which might convince him of staying put at Liverpool, for at least one more season. To begin with Liverpool’s addition of Daniel Sturridge has been welcoming news for the Kop, the former Chelsea man has put up some delightful displays in his four appearances for the club and Suarez may be looking forward to forming a formidable partnership with the Englishman. Suarez has publicly cited his admiration towards the philosophy of new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, if Rodgers manages to bring top quality players in the summer, Suarez might be convinced that his own ambition matches with that of the club. It is also important to consider that Suarez is a family man, he currently resides in Liverpool with his wife and daughter. Suarez has emphasized on the fact, that he and his family are very settled in the city, keeping football aside this might be one of the reasons which might force him to stay at Liverpool for a bit longer. We should also accept the fact that all the talk about Suarez wanting to move to a bigger club is mere media speculation, the man himself is very happy at the club and has repeatedly declared his intentions to stay, him signing a long term contract also points to the fact that Suarez really does want to spend more time at Liverpool.

Loyalties no longer exist in football or let’s say, it is extremely rare these days for a player to sacrifice his personal accomplishments for the sake of the club. Suarez’s exclamations of his commitment to the club are echoed by those of other players in the past, excellent examples would be of Cesc Fabregas and Van Persie. Both the men repeatedly pledged their allegiance to Arsenal, before moving to bigger clubs when the opportunity came. Suarez might very well follow the same path if Liverpool fail to match his ambitions. Whether he decides to stay or go, it is certain that he will be surrounded by a lot of media speculation, once the summer transfer window opens in August.
