With Mikel Arteta ruled out for approximately three weeks with a calf strain, does that force Arsene Wenger to spend money in the January transfer window?

The January transfer window is nearly at the midway point and Arsenal fans are continuing to see the same old Arsenal. Making matters worst, it has been said that Arsene Wenger would not sign anyone until Theo Walcott's contract discussions had ended.

Wanting to show Walcott that he is a top priority to the Gunners could end up costing Arsenal dearly in the long run.

Without a contract extension from Walcott, Arsenal now has to deal with a Mikel Arteta calf strain in the middle of a congested few weeks for the Gunners. Could this have been perfect timing to force Le Prof into the transfer market?

Well, as we have seen time and time again, Wenger has his methods and more often than not, he sticks to his guns. Even if the fans believe he should do this or should do that, the French Manager does not generally give into the fan pressure.

This time around, he loses Arteta who has been vital for Arsenal this season considering the absence of Abou Diaby.

Wenger said at his press conference: "He has a scan on Monday. He will be out for approximately three weeks. It is a calf strain.''

With About Diaby making his return to the Arsenal side this past weekend against Manchester City, going from history, Wenger will probably use Diaby's return as an excuse to not have to bring in another midfielder. But, is that the case?

Arteta has shown consistency since his arrival at the Emirates and his ability to play an attacking role as well as adapt to a more defensive role has been extremely important for Arsenal. Given the absence of Jack Wilshere to start the season and then Diaby's prolonged injury problem, Arteta stepped in to fill the void.

Can counting on a very injury prone Diaby cost Arsene Wenger a Champions League spot come the end of the season?

Arsenal fans will be praying that this forces Wenger to make some moves, but it does not appear as of right now that he will.

The Spanish midfielder will miss Wednesdays clash with Swansea for the FA Cup replay as well as matches against Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool.
